DEFINITION:Central Semitic, to help. 1. Ezra, from Hebrew cezr, hypocoristic form of a name such as cazrîl, God (is) my help, from cazr-, cezr-, presuffixal form of czer, help (l, God; see l). 2. Lazarus, from Hebrew elczr, God has helped, from czr, he has helped, lengthened form of czar, to help (el, God; see l). 3. Hasdrubal, from Latin Hasdrubl, from Phoenician (Punic) *cazr-bacl, his help (is) Baal, from *cazr, his help, from cazr, help, from *czr, to help + *-, his (*bacl, Baal; see bcl).
