1 Reflection LaToya Bennett Rasmussen University EC250/EEC2403 Advocating for Children with Special Needs Carol Laman February 5, 2024
2 Reflection I aspire to grow into a teacher where my voice carries weight and can truly make a difference for my students and their families. As a paraprofessional, expressing concerns about a child's welfare may often fall on deaf ears, which can be disheartening. We, as paraprofessionals, genuinely care about the children and their families, so it's particularly challenging when our concerns are not acknowledged. Currently, I don't have specific changes I aim to enact. Instead, I am committed to sourcing resources that parents can utilize to support both themselves and their child. I refuse to give up on any child; I am determined to advocate for those who are struggling. I've become more adept at assisting children by diligently documenting observations and milestones. I ensure to share my concerns and observations with teachers or administrators, and I actively engage with parents to discuss these concerns and assess if they notice similar issues at home. Organizing appointments with parents allows them to review documents and discuss the positive aspects of their child's progress in class. In conclusion, this course has equipped me with enhanced communication skills to engage effectively with families regarding their child's needs. I've learned how to assess a child's requirements and present them to the teacher. Most importantly, I've embraced the importance of persistently advocating for children and their needs, escalating concerns until they are heard. Additionally, I've acquired strategies to support children in areas where they require improvement.
