In your first post, introduce yourself to your instructor and peers. Share who you are, where you are from, and what your goals are for taking this course. Then proceed to craft your response to the discussion questions below. Create one initial post and follow up with at least two response posts. For your initial post, address the following in a few paragraphs: 1. What values do the humanities hold for you personally or for your career goals? 2. How do you think they apply to your professional life? 3. What skills do you think the humanities can teach you? For your response posts, address the following: 1. What commonalities do you find between the posts you selected and yours? What differences? 2. Select a peer with a different career goal. What can you learn from the value the humanities hold for their goals? Remember, this assignment is graded on the quality of your initial post and at least two response posts to your classmates. If you refer to any module resources, be sure to include an attribution (or citation) for the resource. To complete this assignment, review the Discussion Rubric . My name is Tausha, I am engaged to an amazing man, I have two kids of my own that are 11 and 5 and my fiancé gave me two step kids that are 17 and 13, both his and my oldest are boys and both our youngest are girls. We have a dog, a cat, and a bunch of birds. I am the crazy bird lady in my neighborhood. We live in Utah. My goals for taking this course is to earn my master’s degree in psychology and to have a better understanding of why us humans are the way we are. The values that humanities hold for me personally and for my career goals consist of the following: giving me an intellectual perspective into the behaviors of humans, as well as a deep understanding of why the behaviors may have came to be. Learning about humanities will help me achieve my career goals of earning my degree and giving me the materials and information I need to effectively use what I’ve learned to help others in my community. I honestly couldn’t put words together for what this meant to me until after I read about what humanities is. I know I have a lot to learn, and I am eager to learn everything there is to know about humanities. I hope to learn so much more in this course, as I know it will apply to so much more than just my degree I am working towards earning. Something I found by researching about the values of humanities that really helped me with this discussion post is: “ Humanities expand our understanding of different human cultures and enable us to understand ways in which they're similar and ways in which they differ, in the present and historically, delivering a broader perspective on the world in which we live.” https://online.utpb.edu/about-us/articles/humanities/the-value-of-humanities-in-education/#:~:text=Humanities%20expand%20our %20understanding%20of,world%20in%20which%20we%20live. MY RESPONSES: My name is Staci; I live in Wisconsin and have worked in emergency medicine for 21 years. I have two grown children that also work in emergency services and a spouse that runs his own business and works in construction. We have two fur babies, and I love cooking, gardening, and preserving food for our family. I like walking, going out on the Harley, swimming, and playing online games. Mostly, I am very reclusive, and we keep to ourselves. I am in school for my B.A. in business management because real-world experience and longevity in a job hold no place for promotion, like having twelve different acronyms behind your name. By definition, the human race, human beings collectively . "appalling crimes against humanity" or humaneness; benevolence. "He praised them for their standards of humanity, care, and dignity." Another known definition of humanities is those branches of knowledge that concern themselves with human beings and their culture or with analytic and critical methods of inquiry derived from an appreciation of human values and the unique ability of the human spirit to express itself. In my line of work, humanity plays a prominent role in each patient encounter in how I talk to and medically treat them. I treat all my patients like they are my family members and try to go above and beyond on each call to make them feel cared for. Humanity is all we have left; we must treat everyone with dignity, love, and respect. Without dignity, love, and respect, we have nothing left. We are just a bunch of cattle on a slow walk to our graves.
I am still determining what to expect from this course or what I will learn, but I am sure we will all have fun. Good luck, and God bless. Hello All, My name is Frank and I am pursing a BA in Communications. This degree will assist me with a higher probability of being promoted within my current career. I am a program manager on a government contract. When not at work, I am working on my family’s small farm where I keep bees and my wife plays with small goats. My wife and I have 7 children, that are all now young adults. I currently reside in the capitol of the bluegrass state…which suites me well, because I enjoy a refreshing glass of Buffalo Trace, neat. After reviewing the Module One references resources, I guess my goals for this course is to take away a better understanding of how humanities will assist me with building relationships with clients from different backgrounds. In addition to supporting my career, humanities help me understand the similarities and differences within other cultures or societies. The value that humanities hold for me personally is, to have a better understanding and appreciation for human beings from all types of cultures and background different from what I am accustomed to. I hope while navigating through this course, closer to completion, I’ll be able to better answer this question. On a professional level humanities applies because we all interact with other humans. Not all humans are associated with the same social systems. Humans have different cultures, interests, values, religions, and just overall come from different walks of life. The humanities allow me to have a better understanding of my fellow humans no matter their similarities or differences. The humanities will most likely teach me skills or provide resources that will assist with being able to connect with human beings no matter the differences. Give me a more profound understanding of humankind. Assist with cross cultural connections. MY RESPONSE: I too hope to take away a better understanding of what humanities are on a deeper level. I hope that taking this class will assist me in being able to answer discussion posts and homework assignments in a more meaningful and in depth way. Right now I feel like a kindergartener just learning about the alphabet and honestly it is getting a little overwhelming for me. I want to do well with my assignments and am afraid that I am going to fall short because of not having a better understanding of the subjects at hand. If we persevere and keep working towards what we want to achieve we will make it. We just have to remember that. Hello all, My name is Ben Edwards, and I am from a small suburb near Portland, Oregon. I live here with my husband and our dog, and we are spending our free time camping this summer and enjoying the outdoors, of which there is a lot in Oregon. I am a psychology major, currently focusing on clinical psychology. Learning more about the humanities is important to me; the humanities teach empathy, allow a close look at the human condition, and can explain many human behaviors, which interests me since I am earning a degree in psychology.
