For my topic on the file, "Grade Pitch and Slippery '' I choose to discuss number six, what is an adhesion railroad? An adhesion railway provides the resistance that prevents a vehicle's wheels from sliding on the road (AST, 2021). It is stated, "with a clean dry wheel running on a clean dry rail the “frictional coefficient” between them may be as high as 0.35 or 35%" (AST, 2021). Frictional coefficient can be defined as the resistance between these two aforementioned surfaces. For example, in the case of a train and railway the frictional coefficient is equal to the available frictional resistance divided by the adhesive weight on the driving wheels (AST, 2021). This however alters due to the presence of oil, ice, or water between two surfaces; friction would be reduced to near zero and the likelihood of slipping is higher (AST, 2021). This result is not always consistent and also depends on speed. Wheel slips can have a higher occurrence as the speed increases (AST, 2021). This also can be said if the speed is slower however the slip possibilities still exist. Overall, the adhesion limit is complex and has multiple factors that contribute to sliding. This concept can be applied to everyday life. While living in Guam for example, rain and roads made of carol created adhesion. The relationship between the surface of the road and my tires took a greater risk of slipping which is why a reduced speed was a better chance to not slipping. References AST Group. (2021).
