Adrian Mackins -Describe the relationship between the epicenter of an earthquake and the amount of people that would be exposed to severe to extreme shaking. Make a note of the amount of people that would be affected in this group. The epicenter of an earthquake lies directly above the focus, where the rupture occurs. The impact of severe to extreme shaking on people depends on factors like earthquake magnitude, type, and population density. In the Haiti earthquake, the densely populated area near Port-au-Prince experienced intense shaking due to its shallow depth, leading to numerous injuries. -Describe the relationship between the epicenter of an earthquake and the population density of the country. Ordinarily, earthquakes in densely populated regions pose a higher risk of causing extensive damage and casualties compared to those in less populated areas. The concentration of people and infrastructure in these regions increases the potential for earthquake-related harm. The Haiti earthquake's impact was exacerbated by its occurrence in a densely populated area, complicating disaster response due to challenges in rescuing trapped individuals and providing aid amidst substantial rubble.
-The extreme level of poverty that existed in Haiti, combined with a series of other natural disasters (i.e. hurricanes and earthquakes) caused the country to be ill-prepared for the 2010 earthquake. What measures could have been taken in advance to reduce the vulnerability to subsequent disasters and enhance their preparedness? Enhancing building codes and construction standards in Haiti can mitigate the country's susceptibility to natural disasters, safeguarding lives and livelihoods. Implementing resilient structures against earthquakes and hurricanes is crucial. Furthermore, establishing a thorough disaster preparedness strategy, encompassing early warnings, evacuation procedures, and emergency shelters, is essential. The investment in these preventive measures is significantly more cost-effective than the expenses incurred in responding to and recovering from disasters. -When earthquakes or other natural disasters occur, do you think it is the government's responsibility to help people or is it better to donate money to nongovernmental organizations (NGO's)? I believe it’s the governments job. The reason why you are government is to make decisions to better the people in your district. Government should make solutions to try to fix the problem or ways to help people when the problem occurs. -Describe how the fact that Haiti is an island nation, the time of day and the urban epicenter of earthquakes in Haiti could influence future natural disasters and responses in the country.
