Earth Systems Geography GEOG 170A, Section 001 Fall 2023 Week 11 Discussion Assignment: Evidence of Flooding In this assignment, you’ll look for evidence of flooding in the local built environment (within ENR2) and consider what sort of fluvial erosion and deposition you see there. 1. First, you should head down to the lowest level of the building, and take a look at the lowest landscape beds there. What evidence do you see that water has gathered in the lowest parts of this built landscape? When going to the lowest level of the building, the evidence that I see that shows that the water has gathered in the lowest parts of this built landscape is small puddles which can be from drainage. Some soil also may be darker in different areas due to water. 2. Continue to examine the lowest landscape beds. What additional evidence of fluvial erosion and deposition do you see throughout the lowest landscape beds? Additional evidence of fluvial erosion and deposition I see throughout the lowest landscape beds is small streams, as well as exposed roots from trees. 3. Take a photo of fluvial erosion or deposition in the lowest landscape beds. Paste it into your submission and describe what your photo shows. I was not able to take a picture of fluvial erosion or deposition in the lowest landscape beds, however here is a picture online to depict and demonstrate the process. which is the detachment of material from river beds.
4. Now, take a look at the water drains present throughout the building. Examine both the upper drain outlet (from the floor above) and the drain inlet (the raised metal circles into which water drains). What evidence of weathering by water do you see on the upper drain outlets ? Does it appear that the lower drain inlets have experienced the same type of weathering, and why do you say so? Evidence of weathering by water that I see on upper drain outlets are color changes in the outlets or cracks on the surfaces. Lower drain inlets may experience mold. 5. Look at the rocks within the lower drain inlet. Do they appear to have been weathered by water, and if so, what type of weathering has occurred? Rocks in the lower drain inlet that have been weathered by water have some discoloration . The weathering that has occurred in this situation is chemical weathering. 6. Take a photo of weathering on or in an upper drain, a lower drain, or the rocks within a drain. Paste it into your submission and describe what your photo shows. Here are examples of weathering in a drain and on a rock. Weathering is being shown on the rock because it is being broken down . It is shown on the drain because it is undergoing a chemical composition which allows it to exhibit increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared to other steels .
