DQ 1 In what ways can informatics help health care providers overcome current or emerging barriers to care and increase access to safe, quality health care? Include a discussion of the value and challenges of clinical provider order entry (CPOE) and clinical decision support systems (CDSS) in providing safe patient care in your response. Why are heuristic Principles (human factors/usability/user centered design) important for efficient clinical information systems such as CPOE and CDSS? The importance of patient-centered care in delivering high-quality care helps in providing mechanisms for advancing technology use to facilitate patient-centered care. Health informatics has gained greater importance in health care settings and enables in collecting data for ensuring improvement and quality changes in care.In the current healthcare scenario, the need for structured data is inevitable as it presents with the crucial asset for health care organizations. The health care database encompasses comprehensive patient information that is well-organized and coded in natural language or EHR codes. The data can be reported, searched, interoperated, and capable of taking action that is powered by technology and collaboration where the coded information is accessed by the patients also to view their own health information. The voluminous data are gathered, organized, and structured in the form of coded data and unstructured narrative information for efficient use and in determining about patient care, operations, and financial management; thus, increasing accessibility of data for easy perusal of knowledge experts and clinicians (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2019). The clinical decision support tool known as order sets in the computerized provider order entry (CPOE) system is beneficial in presenting safe, efficient, evidence-based patient care. It is a strong basis for success. The function of order sets is like that of a checklist that ensures
accomplishment of complete critical steps and avoids missing of crucial steps in the process of care giving. In spite of having automated methods for generation of order sets, it is designed and deployed through manual process with contents noticed by local governance committees. Useful order sets are generated by developing understanding of usage patterns of order sets and identifying ‘high value’ order sets. The pairing up of CPOE with clinical decision support system (CDSS) enables in mitigation of errors and dispense stages so that safety processes are improved. Heuristic principles can be used for a systematic assessment of usability of the interface as it applies a set of human factors design principles by people who are trained in usability and can identify violation of the principles. The flaws in usability can be identified using this method, which is also inexpensive and easy to execute. By identifying specific usability flaws, negative consequences on patient safety can be eliminated and high-risk design issues can be determined (Carayon & Hoonakker, 2019).
