Which type of calorimetry/device would you recommend to determine this athlete’s expended energy during their sport? Why?
I would recommend indirect calorimetry because it is more commonly used in sports, and it is non-invasive for assessing an athlete’s energy expenditures through oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. I feel it is also more accurate than direct calorimetry because changes in thermal energy may be harder to assess.

I used the Mifflin-St. Jeor equation over the Cunningham equation because there is no information on Kevin De Bruyne’s fat-free mass. Therefore, there is more room for error if I used the Cunningham equation.

Based on their respective event, do they require more than the RDA of 0.8 g/kg protein for an average individual? Why or why not?
Since Kevin De Bruyne is a soccer player, his physical activity during
a match and during training is intense. There is an increase of oxygen consumption and a higher risk of muscle atrophy if enough protein is not consumed. Soccer players need around 1.3 to 1.8 g/kg, which makes up 12% to 15% of a soccer player’s diet.

Is it necessary for them to consume energy during a competition in their respective event? Why or why not?
It is necessary for Kevin De Bruyne to consume energy during a match. The phosphocreatine system, glycolysis, and aerobic system are used during a soccer match. Based on the long duration of a soccer match, a soccer player should eat a meal rich in carbohydrates, stay hydrated, never skip breakfast, drink something with electrolytes in it, and eat a snack during the match, something like a banana or an orange. During a soccer match, there are times when you run like an endurance runner and times when you sprint. ATP will only last for a few seconds when a soccer player is sprinting. However, it takes a few minutes to replenish ATP. That is why it is important to consume energy during a soccer match.
