HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: · The topic I am exploring is the Tulsa Massacre. Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event. · The Tulsa Massacre was a racial motivated attack on people of the African American community based on the social norms of that period of time. This historical event in my opinion can be seen from a sociological perspective. People who were of Caucasian descent began to feel anger when people of African American descent started to become as wealthy and prosperous as them between the years of 1914 and 1918 after World War I in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It’s said that it stemmed from an incident on an elevator between a black man and white woman that got blown out of proportion and eventually led to racially motivated riots in the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, OK. This incident in history set the foundation for a century of systemic racism in America in which African Americans have consistently suffered. It is also called Tulsa’s Black Wall Street (“Tulsa Race Massacre - Facts, Photos, Coverup,” 2018). Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event. · The KKK had a significant role in this racially motivated attack. Tulsa’s KKK was formed from police men and political figures. These people contributed to arming many of the racist white men who caused harm to people of this community. They weren’t called the KKK then. They didn’t officially form the KKK until six months after the attack (“Tulsa Race Massacre - Facts, Photos, Coverup,” 2018). Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event. · The motivation for the Tulsa Massacre was racism, discrimination, and hate (“Tulsa Race Massacre - Facts, Photos, Coverup,” 2018). Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event. · The social norm during that time was to discriminate and hate. Everyone was segregated. Racism was the sociological norm. This was bound to happen based on the hate in most people’s hearts during this time period, in my opinion. Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic. · Knowing and understanding our history in America helps us to not repeat the same hateful and discriminatory attacks in the present or future. Unfortunately, racism still exists and so does financial equity fluctuations between racial groups such as systemic racism. It is up to us to stop the cycle now and not accept the same behavior today we did back then. REFERENCE:
