Discuss one of your best strengths as a tutor. Provide a concrete example to demonstrate your
point.

I understand the course material well and be able to answer questions on different
aspects the tutees have. If a tutee has some underlying misunderstandings, I think I did
a great job pinpointing them and finding a good way of explaining it. I think I utilized
problem posing to break down bigger problems into smaller ones to test their
understanding.
Discuss one tutoring skill you would like to improve upon. Provide a concrete example to
demonstrate your point.

I would try to improve my seminar participation. I felt that sometimes I did not prepare
the content enough to give thoughtful comments. I think I did an okay job discussing in
small groups but when it came to the large group, I think I could have been more
engaged in the discussion. Also, because I am very busy this semester, I missed some
deadlines and sometimes forgot to transfer ownership when submitting pre-seminar
reflections.
What were some of the challenges you encountered as a tutor working in the SLC Astronomy &
Physics program?

Because the course that I support is the first college level class for most students, one
challenge I have faced is the different backgrounds the tutees have. While some
students who did well in the class worked on the board and discussed with each other, I
feel that there were some who were left behind and were not confident to ask in the
discussion. Therefore, it is challenging for me to approach these tutees and meet their
individual needs.

Drop-in comportment. Although I felt that my session had many active tutees who
discussed their ideas and asked questions, I always feel that some tutees prefer to work
individually and do not want to engage in group discussion. I am not sure how to bring
these students to work together.
