Analyze a Current Health Care Problem or Issue Capella University NHS4000: Developing a Health Care Perspective Dr. Jean Cefalu July 2023 Analyze a Current Health Care Problem or Issue
Unequal access to healthcare services is an essential element of health disparities in the United States, and much about access still needs to be fully understood. (Combs, 2022) Previously, limited access to healthcare was selected. This assessment will explain some of the barriers that cause issues in communities. Presently studies are taking place to address these issues. Many consumers are having problems with accessing care. With this current issue at hand, many residents are suffering medically. Many consumers are self-diagnosing and self- medicating. Elements of the Problem/Issue Research has discovered that many barriers hinder an individual from accessing healthcare. With a growing population of undocumented persons, naturalized citizens, and U.S.- born citizens, many need access to proper healthcare. Facing barriers to healthcare access, the internet can be a particularly appealing source of health information. (Blandari et al., 2014) This can cause incorrect diagnosis and self-medication, leading to overdose or getting sicker. Barriers are not limited to the following: long wait times for appointments, scheduling issues, cost, language, comprehension, transportation, medical jargon, availability of information, and accessibility of information. A recent study showed that undocumented people experience three significant problems: medical attention delays, transportation issues, and receiving the correct type of care. The population comprised restrictive licenses, insurance coverage issues, and labor market working conditions. People of this population tend to put themselves at risk to avoid medical negligence. Not having the proper access to developing a healthier life, and sitting fear, causes poor health. A study done in 2021 discovered that kidney failure was more evident among the uninsured. Another study showed that healthcare services' cost prevents consumers from
receiving medical treatments. In 2017, over 5 million persons did not have transportation, which caused a delay in treatment. Medicaid holders were among the significant groups reported for not having access to transportation. Analysis At Optum, I currently talk with consumers from all walks of life. I work in a department equipped with medical staff conducting house visits. I am the representative that calls these consumers to prepare the practitioners for the house call visit. Making calls to the consumer, I will later discover they need help understanding English and need help to verbalize it. Sometimes I will call, and the member needs help to speak English or understand the questions. Sometimes, the member doesn’t understand their health plan or know how to use it to access healthcare. Presently these are some of the limitations that cause people not to get the help they need. Not knowing, misunderstanding, trust issues, and so much more causes consumers to pull back. Recently a consumer needed to know about getting a home health aide and a nurse to visit her due to having an open wound. The consumer expressed that she was unaware of how to proceed, and her primary provider was not helpful. This is a prime example of a need for more care and resource restriction. She was unaware, and she had no one to guide her. This can develop trust issues as well. Populations Affected by Limited Access to Healthcare Senior citizens, undocumented immigrants, and consumers in rural areas are majorly affected. Seniors may struggle with accessing healthcare in help, transportation, understanding the different tests and medical processes, and so much more. Many don’t know and don’t
