Ella Scimeca Topic Invention” is an important decision-making process that includes writer’s initial decision on the topic he/she will write about and then planning and outlining their paper content. The process usually continues until the end of drafting process. Task: Re-read assignment description for WA1 Argument of Definition. Then brainstorm 4 possible topics for this paper. Work with 4 prompts given below. Write: For each prompt free write 5-10 sentences. State what concept you will be working with; explain why you want to write on this topic; establish if you have a strong personal connection with or a prior investment into this topic. Share your initial thoughts on this topic and establish the significance of your topic. Why is it important to have a clear understanding of the true meaning and/or precise definition of your concept? For each prompt, you need to think of a powerful experience that brought about profound learning and deeply influenced you as a learner and a person shaping you into the being you are today. 1.) Exploratory argument. Inquiring into the true nature of things. Come up with a question about the meaning of an abstract concept. This question should lead you to an inquiry into the true nature of your concept. E.g. What is happiness? What is success? What does it mean to be a father? Write: I would like to explore the meaning behind the concept of love My inquiry question is: What .... is the true meaning of love. The concept that I will be working with is love, and what the true meaning behind it is. I want to write about this topic because I feel like the word love has evolved upon generations and I feel like in today's society people tend to freely use it without knowing its true meaning and many people misuse it in certain situations. I feel like in this generation today, the word has lost its value and a lot of people tend to mix up love with other emotions. I do have a personal connection to this topic because I love my family and friends, and I love life as well as all of the blessings and experiences that I have been given. My initial thoughts on this topic are that everyone experiences love, however the word has lost its meaning and some people tend to mix up love with other emotions. The significance of this topic is to find the true meaning of love and what it means to love someone or something. It is important to establish the true meaning of the word love because the word holds so much value and emotion and sometimes people forget that. 2.) Exploratory argument. Inquiring into the true nature of things. Think of a political, economic, or social question for which the definition itself is central E.g. Is the U. S. a
Democracy or a Republic? Write. State your question: Is __________________ a ______________ or a ______________? Is school effective or damaging to our children? I will be working with the concept of school and if it is effective and helpful, or damaging to our children. I want to write about this topic because growing up I thought school was a learning place where you can share your creativity and express yourself. However now that I have matured and grown up, there are a few aspects about school that can be considered damaging and school can be viewed almost like a “prison.” I do have a strong personal connection to this topic because for the last 14 years of my life, I have been attending school. While I definitely learned a lot and established basic knowledge of the world, there are a few aspects of school that I do not necessarily agree with. I believe that school is important for students and it can teach them a lot, however it also kills students creativity, and the students are treated like robots. It is important to have a clear understanding on this topic so that schools and educators can take this information, and find ways as to how they can better the education system and schools. - Kills creativity - Wake up, go to school, go home and do homework, sleep, repeat (continuous cycle) - Bruning out children - Can’t talk or express feelings in class - Need to raise hand to use bathroom - Uniforms - Stressful - Lack of sleep 3.) Traditional argument. Come up with a statement (positive or negative) and that will require a strong argument of definition. E.g. Wikipedia is/ is not a good source for a college research paper. Money is /is not a source of true Prostitution is not a crime. Write: For my Argument of Definition I can try to prove / refute the argument that _________________________ is / is not a __________________________________________ Abortion is a form of healthcare The concept that I will be working with is that abortion is considered a form of healthcare. I want to write about this topic because I feel like this is a very controversial statement and many people across the country have many different feelings and perspectives on it. I also believe that it is important to understand both sides of the argument, however It is beneficial for people to understand why abortion should be considered healthcare. I do have a personal connection to this topic because I am a woman, and I have a mother, sister, aunts, and friends who are girls. I
