ECED 205 Activity #2 Name: Courtney Andrews After reviewing the content in the Week 2 Module Folder, complete the following questions below (15 points total). 1. Read the article from PBS Parents, “Comparing Preschool Philosophies: Montessori, Waldorf and More” located in the Choices, Schools, and Programs folder. Answer the following questions (3 points): If you were to open your own center, which philosophy would you choose to adopt? Note: This article is not inclusive of all philosophies. You can choose to discuss a philosophy not listed in the article. If I was to open my own center, I would choose Reggio Emilia’s philosophy to adopt. Why would you choose that particular philosophy (i.e. what about this philosophy stands out to you, does it align with your own personal and professional beliefs, etc.)? I choose Reggio Emillia’s philosophy because they use project-based approach. I like project-based approach because the lessons are based on the children’s interest. It also allows children to learn real- world and personal meaningful projects. Children should be able to explore, design, develop and do hands-on problems. It teaches children content knowledge and skills. With the knowledge and skills, they learn they can use them in the future. What steps would you need to complete to adopt this philosophy (i.e. training, certifications/degrees, purchase curriculum, etc. for you and/or your teachers)? Note: Click on the links provided in the article for additional information regarding individual philosophies. When it comes to adopting Reggio Emillia’s philosophy you do not need to have any training, certifications or even degrees to have this philosophy in your center. But sometimes there are unauthorized attempts by individuals and groups that do need a market certification. When practicing this philosophy, they are still learning and studying through their career. There are programs like Goodwin you can take for training but is not required to do. Also, there are plenty of resources that you can use to help you apply this into your program. 2. Watch the video “Earning a CDA Credential Makes Me a Better Teacher” in the Outlining New Expectations folder. List at least three ways that the CDA credential helped the teacher in his/her professional role (3 points): 1. The CDA gave Eleanor her first teaching certification and helped her give the confidence she needs to continue in the early childhood education field. 2. CDA taught Eleanor to work with young children and how to involve the parents into their child’s development. 3. Offers a lot of information to early childhood educators. 3. Review the information in the Working with Boards folder and Chapter 4. Answer the following questions regarding working with a board of directors and/or parent advisory board (3 points): What are some benefits of working with a board? - Drives professional growth - Provides opportunities - Creating Relationships - Involves the community What could be some challenges/barriers when working with a board?
ECED 205 - Miscommunication - Risk management - Disorganization - Imbalance 4. Complete the “Communication Styles Quiz” located in the Effective Communication folder. Answer the following questions (3 points): What is your communication style according to the results of the quiz? I am a Relator. Do you agree with the results? Why or why not? I agree with my results 100% because it describes me so well. After taking the quiz I had read the description and I am more of the nurturing, good listener, open-minded, etc. How do you think your communication style would impact your role as a leader/director of a program? I think it would impact my role as a leader/director of a program in a good way because relators are people-oriented and value relationships. I think being a good listener is a good thing especially when it comes to getting ideas. I love to be creative and enjoying change. I think it can be a good impact if I was a leader or director. 5. Review the “Tips from the Field” located throughout Chapters 3-5. Choose one tip from each chapter (not the entire section of tips, but one bulleted tip) that you feel would be most helpful in your role as a director. Note: All of the tips are helpful but choose one to discuss in detail. Answer the following (3 points): Chapter 3: Outlining New Expectations Which “Tip from the Field” would you find most helpful in your role as a director? “Be open to staff’s ideas and solutions” Why did you choose this tip? I choose this tip because people teach and do things in a different way. It’s best to get ideas and solutions on what works best for them and the children. Getting this information, it could also help the director provide some of them to others that might need it and help them as well. Chapter 4: Working with Boards Which “Tip from the Field” would you find most helpful in your role as a director? “Get to know your board members and include them in going communications” Why did you choose this tip? I choose this tip because it allows you to get to know them and for them to get to know you as well. Instead of just going into a face-to-face meeting and not knowing anyone, it can be a way you know a little bit about them before going to a meeting. Once you get to know them, you can thank them for talking to you. It shows them that you appreciate them for the work they have done, and you look forward into working with them more into the future. Chapter 5: Effective Communication Which “Tip from the Field” would you find most helpful in your role as a director? “Communication is key. Keep staff and families informed. Let them know how to reach you.” Why did you choose this tip? I choose this tip because I agree that communication is the key. Communication is a big part
