HOMI 500 Scenes and Stories Template Text:  Make sure sermon ideas are clear and well worded.  Tell the biblical story with imagination and realism.  Recognize the usual phases of a narrative.  Use language that appeals best to the imagination.  Tell the story as would an eyewitness.  Look for vivid imagery and narrative in the text. This assignment involves the retelling of a selected biblical narrative in such a way as to use imaginative and vivid language and narration. Complete the exercise with the following steps: 1. Read the selected biblical narrative several times in different translations. Note here the theological purpose of the story as best as you can discern it. The theological purpose of the Scripture is no matter what you are going through the only thing that should matter is that Christ is preached. When the odds are against be sure that Christ is preached. 2. Notice the kinds of language used in the text you are studying:  Figurative language  Descriptive language  Sensate language  Concrete language  Specific language 3. Analyze the dynamics of the situation and note them here.  Setting: Paul was in a Roman prison sometime between 60ad and 62 ad.  Characters: Paul, Timothy, Epaphroditus, and the Church of Philippi  Relationships: Paul is their mentor and partner in sharing the Gospel.  Dialogue: Encouragement in hard times  Motives: to up lift every believer to know that God Plan Wil be completed.  Divine involvement: Those who are to persecute Paul has turned their lives over to God because of Paul.  Surprises: Paul has converted prison officials and is rejoicing even though he is imprisoned. 4. Sketch the story by using five phases:  Situation: Paul is in prison because he refuses to stop preaching and teaching the Gospel.  Stress: One would be stressed because being blamed for doing what is right seems wrong but God has a plan.  Search: We search for reason as to why God allows things to happen but in the end God has a purpose.  Solution: Trust God in all situations and He will provide.  (New) Situation: My prison is my freedom. 5. Fill in from background research and imagination the phases of the story not described in the text. Even if you are in chains use them to help you in your life and ministry. When looking at your life situations know that two things matter. First, God will give you the strength when you need it.
