Larger social structures can and do affect social changes at a micro-level and influence individual lives. Reflect on a major social change or movement you have observed in the U.S. in the past 5 years. Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: How has this social change or movement affected you personally or influenced your daily life? Which types of social groups, institutions, or other social structures may have contributed to the rise of the social change movement you have noticed? Explain your response. Looking back through past social change and movements I would have to say a movement and change that influences my everyday life would be The Black Lives Matter Movement. Although this movement was founded over ten years ago in the year of 2013 as a hashtag, it has been a consistent uprising topic throughout the past few years. This movement was originally founded during the trial and acquittance of George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martain. The Black Lives Matter movement began to resurge in the wake of George Floyds death due to police brutality. The Black Lives Matter movement has evolved significantly, garnering national and global attention. The Black Lives Matter Movement has brought awareness to police brutality, the abuses committed by for profit jails, and the over policing in minority neighborhoods. The social change of the Black Lives Matter movement has influenced my daily life in many ways. I am now more aware of my surrounds and the actions I should take when and if pulled over by a member of law enforcement. The events that have taken place in the awake of The Black Lives Matter movement have opened my eyes to numerous of other social injustice and racism going on with housing situations, education, and health care. Some of the social groups, institutions, and social structures that have contributed to the rise of The Black Lives Matter movement are The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), BaJI (Black Alliance for Just Immigration), Color of Change, and The Movement for Black Lives, UndocuBlack Network, and past elected officials as well as political actors. The Black Lives Matter Movement is a global and political movement that no one wants to formally be a part of socially. The movement is beyond people just losing their life from police brutality.
