Describe your child’s academic skills between 6 and 10 and assess how well these skills are developing. The 5th grade report card will be useful for this but you should also incorporate your own observations. What are you doing to help your child? Academically, Carlos’s academic skills are appropriate for his grade level. According to the 5th grade report card, he demonstrates strength in all areas of reading and spelling. His academic achievement in this area makes sense because he always has a fiction book with him and he and I constantly talk about the books he’s reading. He often has trouble in math, specifically in areas of mathematical problem solving, understanding of data, number concepts, graphical applications and arithmetic computation. So to help him develop his math skills further, I’ve been trying help him with his math homework as much as possible. In the future, I would like to link his interest in science and building things with his math homework to show him that he can see the interdependence between the fields of math and science. Carlos’s writing skills is also appropriate for his grade level, but I want to transfer his excellence in speaking to his writing by encouraging him to read different books genres and styles and talking to him about the book. Authoritative is by far the best parenting style, allowing a child to have warmth, but still being able to set limits. But the extent to which I allow and encourage Carlos’s freedom has definitely changed. Back in preschool, I wanted my child to have as many experiences as possible. It’s one of the reasons that I originally signed up Carlos for baseball and soccer. In preschool, I deliberately exposed Carlos to a variety of experiences so that he would be able to find out what he was interested in - whether he wanted to or not.
