The Book A Child Called “It” written by Dave Pelzer who survived one of the most severe child abuse cases in history. He wrote about his life from the beginning when family life was good, and throughout the abusive years, until he was finally rescued. Before kindergarten Dave remembers his life being happy. He stated in the book that, “"My family was the 'Brady Bunch ' of the 1960s. My two brothers and I were blessed with the perfect parents. Our every whim was fulfilled with love and care." But in the years after that he faced unimaginable pain and abuse mentally and physically.

Young David is being scolded by his teacher Miss Chestnut for getting up during class 28 times to lick the light switch, pencil sharpener and among other things. She decides to send a note home with David to tell his mother that she will be visiting to talk about his behavior. While this takes place, there is another form of a power struggle going on inside a young David’s head his OCD is whispering to him that he needs to do abnormal things such as smack the heel of his shoe to his forehead.

His mother treats him like a slave, giving him daily chores and unbelievably ruthless punishments. He has become inhuman to her as she refers to him as “It.” The only hope of survival relies on his dad, in God, or in a miracle. His story promotes the courageous human spirit and the determinate to survive.

The book A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer is an exquisite book. It is Mr. Pelzers’ way of dealing with the dark night of his soul. He tells his journey through extreme child abuse, and how he overcame his past and now uses it for good. When I was younger and going through a rough time I picked up this book and read it in one day, I was overwhelmed with the fact that someone made it out of all that ,this great man did and he still continued to have a positive attitude. A Child Called “It” is a powerful book written by Dave Pelzer about his childhood and the hardships he encountered with his family, peers, and community. Middle childhood can be a life altering point in a young child’s life, which many theorist have studied over the years. This paper will review a few of those theorist thoughts, and how their theories apply to young David’s childhood. The theorist work that will be covered will be Bronfenbrenner and his ecological systems model, Piaget’s theory of development, and lastly Kohlberg’s theory of moral reasoning. It is important to understand what was going through David’s mind as he dealt with this trauma and how he was able to survive it.

He was used to live in his brother’s shadow, but when the boat accident happened to them, he was the only one to survive. As he was always indentifying himself the less important one, he considered it was wrong that he was the one who would still have a life. As a result of nervous breakdown, he tried to kill himself with cutting his wrists in the bathroom, fortunately his father found out and save him. Then he went to the psychiatric for four months. When he comes back, there are still issues he needs to deal with.

Written by Dave Pelzer, and his lifelong struggle to both survive and to reclaim his identity and gain a normal life back. Pelzer has overcome many things since that time period in his life. A Child Called “It” became a #1 worldwide best seller. Pelzer is also recognized as one of the nation’s most effective and well respected communicators addressing corporate groups, conventions, and human-service professionals. Pelzer’s tremendous accomplishments have reaped personal commendations from former Presidents Ronald Raegan, and George Bush. Michael Abernethy acknowledges, “In 1993 Dave was honored as one of The Outstanding Young Persons of the World, he was also selected as a torchbearer for the 1996 Olympics Torch Relay” (par. 1). Pelzer currently has dedicated his life helping others learn how to help themselves. Pelzer brought attention to child abuse, when children endure severe physical abuse, children are robed of their normal sense of self and their normal sense of home.

The beginning of the book talks about what it was like before things went horrifyingly wrong. The family took vacations together, his mother was a loving mother and wife, and Dave's father was his hero. This eventually changed, as did everything in Dave's life. His father never turned out to be his hero, but a drunken firefighter who left him, and at times he wished his mother dead. When the torture and abuse began it was minimal, Dave describes it in the book as punishment instead of discipline but as the book progressed so does the intensity. As the story progresses Dave's feelings are expresses, he speaks of his mother, as either "The Bitch" or just "Mother" there is absolutely no love in the way he speaks of her at all. His anger is also expressed and shown in way he talks about his, once beloved hero, his father and his brothers.

After reading the book, “A Child Called It” by Dave Pelzer, I will say this a melancholic book that depicts the true child abuse that Pelzer suffered in the hands of his mother. This book describes his horrifying experiences in child abuse and I would greatly recommend reading it. The book is fabulous and once you start reading it you will not want to put it down. Pelzer touches on the cruel abused faced by his mother and his deep willingness to survive and try to get ahead in life. This book is a step toward understanding the many different types of abuse and how to recognize the various forms of maltreatment. What did I learn from this book? The only thing that comes to mind when I'm asked that question is pain. I didn't know what real pain was until I tried to understand what this child went through. Everything that meant anything to him, his family, those who should be the closest, was drowned out. He didn't know what to think and so often in the world today, we are naive. We don't have a clue of how life could be, and of how lucky we truly are to have the kinds of backgrounds that we were blessed with.

You may remember that in training we emphasize how many abused and neglected children remain so attached to their families that they want to live with them at any cost. This was not Dave Pelzer's experience. He grew to hate his mother for singling him out for systematic torture. His anger helped him survive: "I wanted to show The Bitch that she could beat me only if I died, and I was determined not to give in, even to death." Perhaps the security of his early years helped Dave develop enough resilience to survive the abuse and grow up to be an emotionally healthy adult with a child of his own.
