Short Story Long Podcast with host Chris ‘Drama’ Pfaff and special guest Kevion Stirdivant Coaching session 1 with ‘Coach Kev’ Two questions we need to answer first. 1.) Who am I? 2.) What do I want to do? Step 1: Put on lenses of appreciation. “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Change your perspective on past experiences. “Take off lying lenses, put on lenses of appreciation.” Take a bad situation and change the story you are telling yourself about that bad experience. “The answers that we find are determined by the questions that we ask.” Look at horrible situation and ask what is awesome about this. Step 2: Recognize, Realize, Recreate. When you are in a funk, feeling off, or having a bad day use the 3Rs. How do you know if you are in a funk? Use a rating system to measure your energy on a scale of 1 to 10. If you are below a 7, recognize it. Then realize that you are in a funk – analyze the “real lies” that you are telling yourself about the funk you are in. Separate reality from the negative story you are telling yourself. EX: You didn’t get a job. Reality: You simply did not receive a job offer. Story: “I’m not good enough, I’m goanna go broke, I’m never going to be successful.” Remove negative story and realize reality. Finally, Recreate - Create a new story, use your lenses of appreciation and tell yourself a positive, reality-based story. Step 3: The 7 Equities – 1. Mind 2. Body 3.
4. Feel - pay attention to your emotions, what prompts them, and how you deal with negative ones
“At practice, Coach was always shouting the word Dig!” (Ehrmann 2011, pg. 53)What coach doesn’t ask for their players to work harder, dig deeper, or strive? We all do. “But to Coach it always meant: Dignity, Integrity, and Grace.” (Ehrmann 2011, pg. 53). Joe Ehrmann’s book InSideOut Coaching is an amazing look into why coaches coach. My mind was blown. My book looks like a firework display of highlights, underlines, and notes. There are so many ideas in this short book my head swam. The book really made me question the what, why, and how I am coaching. His ideas and opinions are a game changer for me. I can relate to Parade Magazine’s assessment; Joe Ehrmann is “The most important coach in America.” upon completing the book. For me the D.I.G.
In life, you encounter many situations and people that aid in molding you into the person you are meant to be. When these instances in time occur, we may not realize it, but looking back they made a huge impact on our lives. For the past four years, I have been a member of the Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers Basketball Team, and while the sport itself taught me many lessons and skills I can use to be successful, there was one coach that managed to do the same.
"no learning to accept life the way it was meant to be and acting on it is going to bring change."
John F Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, once said that, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” This quote means that change is unavoidable and that it is always happening. Change occurs whether we want it to or not and because of that, we must continue to look forward. Some of the changes that occur in a person’s life are minor and other changes are more significant.
DG - Serial Informative Essay Final Draft Justice has not been served for Hae Min Lee, a eighteen year old girl that was strangled to death in her car then found four weeks later in Leakin park. I think that Adnan Syed(Hae’s ex-boyfriend) is not guilty he gave his phone to his friend jay that day. Jay may say he did not have Adnan’s phone but the calls that the cell towers received only make sense in adnan’s story not only that, but Jay has lied about a lot or should I say changed his story up throughout the serial podcast episodes 1-5. My class has been listening to Serial the podcast, the author Sarah Koenig leave very discreet messages that make me believe Adnan Syed is non-guilty. The first reason being
• Question why you believe the things you do. Do you do it because you genuinely feel it’s right and true (backed by sound evidence) or is it a byproduct of some external factor? Introspection and actual self-realization are hard, but we’re used to doing hard shit,
“It may be unfair ,but what happens in a few days ,sometimes even a single day can change the course of a whole lifetime. “(142
“ They always say time changes everything but in all reality you have to change them yourself”
This quote emphasizes the idea that solving the problem is not the main focus anymore. For some, unfortunately, the priority is to not lose face and to stick stubbornly to what one wants without allowing for
Our lives sometimes may fall into a bundle of broken pieces. Somehow pride gets in the way and we try our best to fix it ourselves. We can do it, we think, and so we struggle to fix it ourselves. After several attempts, we realize there is nothing we have been able to do to fix our broken toy.
The truth is, during the time in my struggles, I came to realize, either correctly or incorrectly, several things that I am sure are going to affect me for my entire life. First of them being, that all things pass in time. After looking back on all the pain I suffered, and how now everything was over, I felt for once the temporary nature of experiences in life. I wouldn’t call this feeling nihilism, because I also understand it is important to care about the here and now to survive, but people around me, and eventually myself, started noticing how phlegmatic I had become. This has never affected my work ethic, as I have always had a personal drive to push forward, but it is growing more and more disconcerting for those around me. In the same hand, however, another trait developed because of this experience is a resilience to difficulty. The moments I have experienced have helped to increase both my physical and mental pain tolerance and made me into an individual capable of handling tough situations. Regardless of the nature of the effects this experience has had on me, one thing if for certain, I am changed forever due to my time in the Pride
Radio is a special man that father died when he was young and his mother raised him alone. It seemed he always had a radio with him and a shopping cart with his belongings just roaming around the place and pick up things he likes. He was never very social at first, when the football team took him and wrapped him in tape and locked him in a closet spooked him even worse. Coach Jones asked him to come to the next practice and help out, you can tell Radio wanted to just to have something to do, but he was scared of the football players. When he showed up he was scared and shy, but he enjoyed watching. The first words Coach Jones heard Radio say was Radio which is where he got his nickname. He got food and started warming up to everyone no matter
Change starts with the perception of its need, so a wrong initial perception can be the first
Challenge yourself to see the positive. View crises or problems as opportunities or learning experiences and eliminate negative self-talk. Don’t allow yourself to feel like a victim of a project
