In the Holocaust by Bullets Father Patrick Desbois recounts the tale of the mission he gave himself to discover and inspect all the mass burial sites of a million Jews exterminated by Nazi Mobile Units in Ukraine amid World War II. He started by wanting to travel to the burial site in Rawa Ruska where his grandfather Claudius had been taken during world war II. The Holocaust began in 1939 and ended in 1945 when the Nazis were defeated by allied powers. The leader during this time, Adolf Hitler, targeted the Jewish, political opponents, homosexuals, dissenting Christians, Jehovah witnesses, Gypsies, the handicapped, the mentally disabled, psychiatric patients, soviet prisoners of war, trade unionists, and anti-Nazi clergy. Hitler believed in creating an all-powerful race. Hitler and many Nazis claimed that they were killing Jews because they did not have enough food to go around. Eleven million people were killed during the Holocaust. Six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust. About two thirds of the Jewish community in Europe was wiped out. The Holocaust, a morbid atrocity that made people question humanity, was the cause of millions of deaths. One of those victims of this brutality was Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who hid from the Nazis along with her family. Although she was merely ordinary, Anne Frank kept a diary which became a significant, historical artifact in the modern world as it details her account of concealing her identity from the outside world. Her story, told in an innocent perspective, allows individuals to reflect the dreadful events of the Holocaust and acknowledge how far we have come since then. Even though she died along with millions of other victims from the Holocaust, her spirit still exists thanks to her articulately written words in her diary which is now considered one of the most famous works of literature. Anne Frank’s legacy still lives on today because her story provides a primary source of a dark period in history, insightful contemplation of humanity, and motivation for people to stand up against unjustified persecution.
The Holocaust is a topic that some think of as a very essential part of history that students should learn about. On the other hand, some would argue that it is too severe for middle school students. Without a doubt, Nazis abused their large power and used it towards destruction and in so, violated civil rights and killed 6 million Jews. The Holocaust was a turning point in history that is only taught based on the judgement of schools. The Holocaust Museum in Houston says, “During the Holocaust religious, moral, and legal systems failed in deterring the dangers of prejudice.” This can compare to how there is a large debate on whether students should or shouldn’t learn about the Holocaust and topics similar to it. The Holocaust was a major part of history that has influenced many people and advanced the future to where we are now; thus, we should educate the the younger generation since teaching about the Holocaust enables you to advance into a better human being, students can use their critical thinking skills, and it honors those who have passed and survived.

The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity quotes Elie Wielsel’s, “Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and human sensitivities become irrelevant. Whenever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place- at that moment- become the center of the universe.” Many people suffered and had to give up their lives during the holocaust. The days of horror and torture during this time is to be told by many different writers. Elie Wiesel, Corrie Ten Boom, and Anne Frank, three writers I chose, all wrote books about the holocaust to make it a little bit easier to understand the real life situations they had to go through while in hiding. If it wasn’t for them, people today wouldn’t know the pain and hardships people had to face at that time. The holocaust was a life changing event that shaped the world to how it now is today.
While examining the works of Elie Wiesel and Primo Levi it becomes apparent that the holocaust was a horrendous time in our human history. However, although both writers went through similar experiences during this time; both seem to reflect and dwell on things differently such as their point of view and lives in the camps as well as the different themes they focus on. In this analysis the stories of the two authors will be compared and as stated above will also focus on how they recount their experiences.
Elie Wiesel experienced several horrors throughout the Holocaust. As a boy, he lost his family and his faith in his own religion because of the mass slaughter of six million Jews along with several different races and religions. Elie describes scenes that a fifteen year old child should never have to see such as frantic families lined up for a death in fire, bodies crushed all over as people ran them over, and babies being thrown into pits of fire.
The quote by Wiesel has a deep meaning that can impact what people have learned about the holocaust. The Jewish holocaust was a devastating event that affected a worldwide number of people then and now. It had come to a point during the holocaust where “fear was greater than hunger” (Wiesel 59) during those times. The words written by Wiesel is indicating that the fear of death and misfortune was far greater than hunger. When people hear the word holocaust they think of how tragic it is, but they do not know true essence of what the survivors had to go through. Although Holocaust literature focuses on a specific period in world history, it also contains some common themes and symbols that help to define this era. The butterfly, for instance, is a symbol for the ephemeral lives of Holocaust children. A child, Pavel Friedman, wrote a poem titled "The Butterfly" during his time in a concentration camp. Since then, the butterfly has been a Holocaust theme for the large number of children who did not survive. A book,I Never Saw Another Butterfly, compiled by Inge Auerbacher, a Holocaust survivor at Terezín, features artwork, poems (including Friedman's poem), and words from many of the young children who died inside Terezín's walls. It is still unforgivable for the things the Nazi party did and is still a very questionable subject on how they were able to accomplish such devastation.
