When a patient checks into Nightingale Community Hospitals they believe the hospital will put there care first and provide quality medicine. Looking at the recent compliance reports there are areas of patient care this hospital needs to improve in. Reporting critical results within 60 minutes, labeling medication containers and reactions with anticoagulation therap.0y are areas that this hospital needs to improve upon. Improving these areas would be just one step toward increasing patient care and satisfaction at this hospital. Developing and enforcing dosing and monitoring guidelines for all anticoagulation therapy will increase awareness of drug reactions and allow for medical records verification among all hospital professional. With verification of medications and patient records will result in less drug reactions. (Franco, Maxwell, Green & Barthol, 2009) Medication reactions can been minimize even more with proper handling, patient care and medical records management.
Being the hospital of choice for patients, employee, physicians, volunteers and community members is Nightingale Community Hospital’s vision while providing quality to its patient care. There are some area the hospital needs to improve to increase their compliance standards with the Joint Communions standards. The improvements are reporting critical results within 60 minutes, labeling medication containers and reactions with anticoagulation therapy. Preparing for The Joint Commission, Nightingale Community Hospital reviews areas of compliance and non-compliance. A periodic performance review, which is a self-evaluation, is utilized by Nightingale Community Hospital, to prepare for The Joint Commission. Prior to the Joint Commission survey, Nightingale Community Hospital wanted to focus on items UP.01.01.01 through UP.01.03.01 of the Joint Commission handbook. According to the handbook, these items focus on the universal protocols for preventing wrong site, wrong procedure, wrong person surgery (2015). Communication, this is the key focus area that is evaluated in this summary. Communication is a key focus area of the joint commission audit and is also a key area in which Nightingale Community can make enhancements. Communications must be a two way free flow of information. The information exchanges occur between providers, staff, and patients or clients. This was an area that needed improvement was noted in the previous accreditation audit. Some noted prior issues from 2 years ago included patient and family education and information not being properly disseminated to the nursing staff. These are areas where we have targeted and currently meet. Some areas that we continue to work on are as follows.

The CNO outlined professional standards for nurses to comply with. The seven that are outlined are accountability, continuing competence, ethics, knowledge, knowledge application, leadership, and relationships. “A standard is an authoritative statement that sets out the legal and professional basis of nursing practice” (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009, p. 3). Although each standard has different meaning, they all work together in order to provide the best possible patient care.

Nurses use a systematic approach to providing individualized care to meet health care needs of patients, families, populations and communities without prejudice. Because nurses assume the responsibility and accountability of all patient care it is critical that they are professional and competent. Setting goals plays a massive part in the guidelines for the nursing practice. This prevents nurses from getting overwhelmed and overloaded. They need time to deliberate and make changes accordingly in order to constantly improve the quality of care for each and every patient. When conflict does arise the cooperation of key players can be beneficial to help improve a situation or problem. Writing a journal and setting goals makes it much easier for nurses to recognize what areas they need a little reinforcing.
