In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque the reader sees World War One from a German’s perspective. The main character Paul Bäumer joins German forces after with his friend. The main character Paul Baumer goes through many difficulties and struggles in time of War. The author suggests that symbols give a better understanding of the brutality of war through butterflies, boots, and women.
Firstly, in the novel All Quiet on the Western Front the reader will see words in the text that symbolise other things besides it’s own meaning. The first important symbol of this novel is butterfly. Butterfly is memory about Paul’s childhood and how he used to collect different types of insects and put them in a case. “One morning two butterflies play in front of our trench. They are brimstone-butterflies, with red spots on their yellow wings. What can they be looking for here? There is not a plant nor a flower for miles. They settle on the teeth of a skull. The birds too are just as carefree, they have long since accustomed themselves to the war.” (Remarque, 128). This quote is important in two ways, one is that Paul remembers his childhood memories, and things that he used to experience when he was young. Paul thinks that after the war he will enjoy his life again with his friends, obviously he won’t catch the butterflies, but he will do different things with his friends.
