Life is always about making important decisions that could change your life completely. Like the story A&P, Sammy made a huge decision to quit his job due to his boss being rude to three young girls wearing bathing suits. John Updike used several literary elements to make the story stand out and for people to relate to Sammy. The most important elements that is used in this story is setting, point of view, and characters.

John Updike was a very unique writer. This man mastered many things. He lived a very interesting life what I enjoyed learning about. Updike’s life includes much success. He took learning to a new level, and he did what he loved and did a wonderful job, earning many awards. While researching, it also came clear to me some of the connections between Updike and his story, A&P. His life from beginning to end is a very remarkable life.

On the surface, the hero of John Updike's much-anthologized short story "A&P" does not seem like a hero on the level of an Odysseus or a Hercules. Sammy is a cashier at a local grocery store. However, when three girls wearing bathing suits enter the A&P, Sammy begins to experience a call to action. For the first time in his life, he takes a stand when he feels as if the pretty girls are being treated with a lack of respect. Sammy feels the first stirrings of rebellion within him, as he chafes against the constraints of his life. This short story focuses on the feelings of loneliness and isolation that lead the common man to seek some form of higher truth or ultimate meaning. The story relates to a teenaged boy 's sudden awareness of the split between his inner feelings and society 's values. I could kind of relate and get gist of what the narrator was feeling throughout the story. In this story, Sammy was an unreliable narrator, and the point of view was first person. It was told from Sammy’s point of view. This was most interesting and beneficial to me, because I like the thought of having an unreliable narrator because it is not thought on to be used mostly. An examination of critical styles represented in John Updike’s provides numerous perspectives for critical interpretation. His descriptive metaphors and underlying sexual tones are just the tip of the iceberg. With the use of his descriptive metaphors, it gave me some ideas on how descriptive that I needed to be in order to achieve the sense of imagery that I needed. The economic and social differences are evident through Sammy’s storytelling techniques and even further open up a biographical look at Updike’s own view’s and opinions. This story is all about the setting. If the story had not took place in a grocery store the story could not have happened the way it did. I feel like the setting was one of the most important part of the story to make the story what it was. John

John Updike is viewed by his readers as a progressive voice in his work that promotes feminist issues. He makes these issues stand out more evidently, rather than hidden, in order for the reader to realize how women are viewed in society. From reading Updike’s A&P, the story sends the message to readers of genders working together to strive for equality. If readers do not carefully and actively read A&P they may miss key messages about the power men hold over women, not just in society but in literature as well. Even though Updike’s A&P seems to be a story about a teenager finally standing up to his boss and quitting the job he hates, the tone used reveals the hidden message on how women are in a male-oriented world. The relationship between both men are women are shown as unequals, men on the top and women always below them, Updike makes sure to open up the reader 's eyes in realizing the way females are being treated unfairly.

At first, I wasn’t sure what exactly the story would be when it came to “A&P” by John Updike (1961). The way that it began definitely had that feel of you’re the character whom is narrating the story. You “see” things from their view. When the manager told the underdressed young ladies that they weren’t at the beach it caused some embarrassment (Updike 94). Although they were shopping in swimsuits, the manager made it a point to make it seem as if they were shopping nude. He had said that the stores policy stated you must be decently dressed, as in having your shoulders covered (Updike 95). Sammy, the narrator of the story and a cashier decided to quit working for the company after the manager refused to apologize for embarrassing the women who we also paying customers. Did Sammy’s choice to quit over that have any effect on how the manager would treat people later on? Likely not. It’s likely he was very set in his way, he followed what the policy had said. Sammy also quit on a whim in hopes to catch the attention of the girls, to be seen as their “hero” (Updike 95) and standing up for them.
