High school: a place of acceptance, growth, and love. Life After High School by Joyce Carol Oates takes place in the small town of South Lebanon, New York in 1959. Oates details the lives of three students: Zachary Graff, Barbara “Sunny” Burhrman, and Tobias Shank. Zachary struggles with finding love; both Sunny and Tobias turn him down during the rough times of the 1950’s, and Zachary’s struggle ultimately leads to his death. Throughout the stories the three characters mask themselves behind a happier and fitter version of themselves; the hide behind religion, lies, and stereotypes. Oates writes in a third person limited point of view to reveal the theme of hiding one's identity is destructive. Oates creates a perspective of literary fiction to reveal the emotion of what the characters feel, think, and act.

Mouth changed the most in Sleeping Freshman Never Lie because in the beginning of this book he was just a Freshman, full of life, but in the end of the novel he tried to kill himself. “He got called Loud Mouth the moment we started school. It was shortened to Mouth after that” (Lubar 8). This quote proves that Mouth did talk a lot, and how it was easy for people to get annoyed, and to start developing inadequate thoughts about him. Mouth was always talkative at the bus stop, at school, and pretty much anywhere else and it was sad to see how things people said about Mouth affected him so much to the point he tried to take his own life.

He resigns himself to his fate at the school and gets as angry as he ever gets over boys "getting fresh" with girls. IF, and I'm not saying he does, but IF he loses his innocence, he is still able to keep an optimistic view on things, sort of like ANN Frank's "In spite of everything, I still think people are good at heart" -kind of narrative.
