Farah Ahmedi was a girl who was desperate to escape her war-torn country of Afghanistan by crossing the border into Pakistan. Annie Johnson was a fierce woman who wanted to support her family by starting an intricate business that cooks meals for factory workers. The next mission missionary was Theodore Boone who was a 13 year old boy who wanted to prevent a bypass from being built through homes and farms, but not until his friend's farm was in the danger zone. However, all three wanted to help, whether it was them self or others. Farah Ahmedi was a woman who wanted to cross the border into Pakistan from Afghanistan. The story “The Other Side of The Sky,” elaborates on this statement by describing Farah Ahmedi’s life, the author states, “Their only hope was to escape to Pakistan”(para. 3). This quote explains that Farah Ahmedi did not want to leave the country out of her own choice, it was a necessary decision. Her country was war-torn, so she and her mom had no choice. After the very difficult and treacherous journey to cross the border through the mountains on the border, and four years in Pakistan, Farah and her mother were finally chosen to come to America. A quote from an interview with Farah elaborates on this statement by stating, “After four years of hardship [in Pakistan] she and her mother are chosen to come to America.” (authorlink 4). Just because Farah and her mother got out of Afghanistan, didn’t mean that the hardship was over. She had lost all of her family
Hannah Roberts conveys her idea of the inevitability of change and the changes individuals go through as they age. Her ideas on having to change and mature as people get older are powerfully expressed throughout “Sky High”. Roberts explores the idea that change is inevitable, and happens as time goes by. The imagery in “It’s an older, more age warped washing line I reach up to now” creates an image of her childhood washing line aged over the years. The washing line can also symbolise Roberts’ youth deteriorating as she transitions into adulthood.
In the novel Parvana, written by Deborah Ellis, Shauzia has made the right decision to leave Afghanistan. As stated above, the reasons why Shauzia made the right decision are that if she were to leave she would
Through this inconvenient situation, they find themselves stranded in the desert. According to Farah Ahmedi’s memoir on pg. 11 (The Other Side of the Sky), “The gate to Pakistan was closed… Where would we stay? There was nothing here, no town, no hotel, no buildings, just the desert.” Soon enough, Farah Ahmedi spots the solution to the situation which is to bribe the guards with money. Unfortunately, Farah and her mother didn’t have the money, but luckily they find another helping and compassionate family that offers help to them. This generous family tells them a secret about a goat path that leads to Pakistan which smugglers use too. Based on Farah Ahmedi’s memoir on pg. 12 (The Other Side of the Sky), “The woman told us that her husband, Ghulam Ali, had gone to look for another way across the border. He was checking out a goat path that supposedly went over the mountains several miles northeast of the border station.” The next day, they set out for the goat path. The climb was long and exhausting including with Farah Ahmedi’s mother, which had an asthma attack which took longer and her prosthetic leg, but they preserved. Farah Ahmedi’s determination and the will to survive brought/lead to her success. Farah Ahmedi finds out that even in a grave situation, there are still kind people like Ghulam Ali. Ghulam Ali gave Farah Ahmedi a chance of survival and gave

Arranged marriage is found in various cultures and countries around the world, including Afghanistan and other parts of the Middle East; having an arranged marriage is thought of as an Afghani tradition and has been a part of life for many families. The practice of arranged marriage has advantages and disadvantages; it can create more family power and give more financial security. Sadly being forced into a marriage can disrupt the independence of the engaged, most women stop their education when they become engaged resulting in many women being illiterate. This makes it impossible for them to be successful without depending on their husbands. Arranged marriage is found in many cultures throughout the modern world, though in a lot of cases it results in a happy family it can also be very limiting on women and often girls are married before they can give consent.
Lack of confidence or self-doubt is something someone deals with more than once throughout their lives, lack of self confidence can put someone through small to severe stages of depression, these stages can create thoughts of suicide or lead to actual attempts of suicide. Being scared of something or someone or being scared to do something that can change your life, when this happens, it kills or severely damages confidence and once confidence is damaged every life choice that has been made or is about to happen is thought upon negatively or reconsider all together. A young child choosing his or her career and sticking to it can create pressure the older the child gets and the more the pressure continues to become larger it can start to diminish confidence. Just because Farah and her mother got out of Afghanistan, didn’t mean that the hardship was over. She had lost all of her family except for her mother when she was in Germany getting her prosthetic leg. Farah wanted to have a better life, so she made the decision to cross the border, helping and changing her life forever.
To undertake a mission means to set a goal for yourself means to set a goal for yourself to accomplish. People are determined and work hard to reach their goals. For example, Farah Ahmedi climbed a mountain on a prosthetic leg to reach freedom. Aengus traveled long and hard to find love. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi was determined on killing the snakes and saving his new family. These characters had different reasons for pursuing their goals and doing what they did. Ahmedi wanted freedom, Rikki-Tikki wanted to protect his new family, and Aengus was set on finding love; however all three shared the determination to accomplish their goal.
Growing up in a war torn country, Farah Ahmedi was used to seeing houses being bombed and her city being invaded. As she grew older, she had a freak accident in which she had lost her leg. Along with this, she had to escape her home in order to save her mom and have a better life. Unfortunately, as Ahmedi and her mother approach the gate to Pakistan, they realize that the door has already been closed. Just as it seems all their luck has run out, Ahmedi and her mother meet a kind man named Ghulam Ali who knows how to get them over the border. He tells them of a goat path that smugglers bribed the guards to keep unguarded and decides to take them along with his family on the steep mountains that make up the trail. According to Ahmedi, she “hardly felt the exertion” even with her prosthetic leg and that her “desperation” gave her “energy” which
Farah Ahmedi’s goal was to cross the Afghanistan border to get to a better life in Pakistan. In the first read, The Other Side of the Sky, it says, “‘Night was falling, we were stranded out there in the open’”(Ahmedi 4). This states it was nighttime and she and her mother had no place to stay. Along the way, her and her mother faced many hardships, “The worst thing would have been if we had gotten separated. We were only risking injury”(Ahmedi 3). In addition, “Terribly warm and we had no water, but we walked. My mother began to wheeze. Her asthma was bad. Her anxiety made it worse. We could have gotten over in little more than an hour if not for my mother. Our journey took many hours”(Ahmedi 11). Overall, they succeeded their mission and made it over the border. For example, “This excerpt from “Escape from Afghanistan” describes their efforts to make
The Other Side of the Sky by Farah Ahmedi is account of her experiences in war torn Afghanistan to finally making it to America. Farah as written in the book, describes the struggles that she and her mother go through to reaching America and living a happy life. With their survival on the line, pressure weighing down on them, taking care of her mother getting through hardships to get the chance to try to be put on the list, Farah
Well The Other Side of the Sky starting Farah Ahmedi had to do that. She and her mother had to leave their war torn city to go to Pakistan for a better life. When they arrived, they couldn’t pass the gates because they were close with the guards. The only way people would cross is if they payed the guards and Ahmadi said “ We don’t have the money to pay them, we only have a little to just pay our bus ticket from Peshawar to Quetta.” After the second day passed and she and her mother got into a conversation with a lady about her husband looking for a route cross the border. Later that night her husband came and said “That there is a another route and it is a smugglers route so we’re going at night and we won’t see any smugglers.” The night time came along and Ahmedi and her mom had to cross the border and Ahmedi with her prosthetic leg didn’t bother her at all. This shows you how strong Ahmedi is and how she completed her mission.
With Fara’s loss of a leg, it seemed almost impossible to get out of Afghanistan and into Pakistan. But so desperate to cross the border, they risked their health, especially Fara’s mother’s. “Her asthma was pretty bad at this point, poor thing,” (Ahmedi 11). This text shows that Fara’s mother’s health was not the best at the time and she could have gotten sick. “Because of her, we had to pause every few minutes, so our journey took many hours,” (Ahmedi 11). This shows that her mother was slowing them down because of her poor health.
