Anti-Bullying Program Analysis

I really like the direction you are going with bullying effecting our adolescents and young adults today. Bullying is “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance” (McKenzie, p. 182). The program that you mentioned in your discussion board is what we need to change a culture. Let’s be honest, bullying is happening beyond school aged children in the U.S. Not taking care of the issue early on results in similar behavior when they get older. I have experienced many people attempting or committing suicide due to the actions of someone else. The programs you mentioned would train students and teachers alike. In orders the change a culture we have to start with our kids.

The anti-bullying movement is a social movement that tries to end all types of bullying including bullying in the workplace, school, and elsewhere. Through the Durkheim’s and Weber’s ideals, one can figure out why this social movement is important, and bullying is not needed in our society. Using functionalism, one could deduce that bullying is necessary to keep society in equilibrium. However, that is probably not the case. The victim of bullying is not socially integrated into one group (or integrated into a group of victims). Being bullied can be due to social and economic differences, which is against the idea of organic solidarity, as this means that people are accepted due to their differences. Bullying prevention policy has been gone about in many different programs, a couple of the important ones include Steps to Respect, which focuses on schools in California, and Positive Action which targets schools in the Chicago area. There are many bullying incidences that seem to commonly appear in schools, homes, and communities. PREVNet is a huge organization that promotes and worships the act of healthy and safe relationships. In reference to my thesis, the PREVNet anti-bullying movement has had a positive result in eliminating the harsh act of bullying in Canada, I will use this idea to support specific topics on cyber bullying, with regards to the PREVNet organization. I will explain what cyber bullying really is, stories and acts that have occurred, an explanation as to why this even occurs in the first place, and treatments that can be used to help these victims.

Carlos Zafón has said, “The words with which a child’s heart is poisoned, whether through malice or through ignorance, remain branded in his memory, and sooner or later they burn his soul.” It doesn’t matter the reason for which someone has harmed a kid, because the effects will last a lifetime. In finishing the Bullying Project I have learned a lot about different forms of bullying, and just how poorly bullying can affect someone.

Now the one of the eight programs is the Greek Anti- Bullying Program. It a intervention program that is four weeks in length, its focal point is on decreasing bullying and victimization. It focuses on constructing positive behavioral changes by not only motivating one individual, but all individuals members. This program was embedded within the wider curriculum of4-6 grade classrooms...consisted of eight instructional hours, each hour corresponding to one curricular activity. Teachers are required to attend 5 sessions equivalent to 20 training hours to create a efficient methods before presenting to students. Although schools, agencies and pediatricians can do much at the community level to mitigate bullying and its effects, the problem is clearly societal in scope. Bullying cannot be stopped with a single intervention or by a single social agency. The use of violence to solve problems is repeatedly illustrated through television and other visual media. Many parents of bullies believe that it is appropriate for their children to learn how to compete in the schoolyard and do not see bullying as an issue (Feldman Hertz, Donato, & Wright, 2013). Too many children in our society are exposed to domestic violence directed towards parents and themselves. The most important step in order to analyze the topic of Bullying is to formulate questions on what is bullying. The cause, effect, and who is the target. The questions should be based on effective evidence, and the characteristic of the topic. Also, they should ask what questions you think would be of interest and of importance for other people to know about bullying. From these questions I should be able to organize information needed for this topic.

With all the supplies the schools need to stop bullying, anti-bullying programs are getting overpriced. So a lot of schools do not have anti-bullying programs because they can’t afford it. “But solutions can be costly. After the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights went into effect, 88 percent of school business administrators who responded to the School Boards Association survey said their districts were spending more money because of the rules”( Amanda Oglesby). After the Anti-Bullying Bill Of Rights was passed schools in New Jersey were forced to have anti-bullying programs but they spend a lot of money on it. This makes it seem that anti-bullying programs are not there to stop bullying but to have the money

Experience of being a victim of bullying can finally damage the mental health of students and motivate them to commit school violence. "According to statistics in two-thirds of cases of the recent school shootings, the attackers had previously been bullied" (Sampson, 2009, p.1). For most children learning process itself may already be a daily struggle and being a target for bullying at the same time can become "the straw that broke the camel's back", after which they consider suicide as the only possible solution. "A study in Britain found that at least half of suicides among young people are related to bullying" (Detlor, 2010). So, due to the fact that problem of bullying negatively affects students' learning ability, their health and the entire school climate society should take definite and urgent measures to solve it.

Initially we thought we were going to be able to conduct an evaluation, but with lack of time, we realized that was no longer feasible. Instead, we decided to take the idea of focusing on the evaluation tools and develop an evaluation how-to of Rachel’s challenge. Our goal was to have a manual to present to UVMC and allow them to continue the evaluation further with our guided manual. During our evaluation of Rachel’s Challenge, it became a concern to us that this program wasn’t really a bullying prevention program, but more a program focused on character building. After a lack of communication between the UVMC and Rachel’s Challenge connections we decided to shift our focus. We still wanted our final product to be a manual, but decided to focus on presenting it to a broader audience. What we went forward with was developing a how-to manual for evaluating an anti-bullying program. As I had already done some background research, getting started went smoothly.
