Chapter 7 refers to the many different types of Federal and State surveys that are nonsectionalized. New England and Colonial era surveys could very from half a mile by half a mile squares to rectangles and squares fit into a township depending on the shape of the township, number of people buying, or instructions from European surveyors. Ohio Company of associations where surveyed 4 degrees east of true north, split into 262 acres sections with reserved sections for religious purposes, schools, and government. Donation tract was a section of 100,000 acres of land set aside for any male willing to live there and help protect from Indians. Mr. Gawande starts his literature on washing hands. He introduces two friends a microbiologist and an infectious disease specialist. Both work hard and diligently against the spread of diseases just like Semmelweis who is mentioned in the chapter. Something I learned, that not many realize, is that each year two million people acquire an infection while they are in the hospital. Mainly because the clinicians only wash their hands one-third to one-half as many times as they should. Semmelweis, mentioned earlier, concluded in 1847 that doctors themselves were to blame for childbed fever, which was the leading cause of
In a bid to encourage people onto the Plains advertisements told success stories of those who had claimed land under the terms of the Homestead Act and had become successful. It divided 2.5 million acres of Plains land into sections or homesteads of 160 acres. People could now claim 160 acres of land. The only requirement on their part was that they paid a small charge and built a house or added something to the land such as a house or a well and lived on the land for at least 5 years.

The ceded lands were to be systematically surveyed into townships six miles square, prior to sale or settlement. Of the thirty-six sections of 640 acres in each township, the sixteenth was reserved "for the maintenance of public schools." The national government then had land to sell and with which they could create new states. The 1787 Northwest land ordinance created the protocol for this, providing a method for admitting new states to the Union, and listing a bill of rights guaranteed in these territories (5).

What are the main points of this reading (focus on concepts, ideas, and then, not on individual facts)? Chapter 27 deals with the politics and cultural abundances during the Cold War. Because of the Cold War the U.S. gained many new technologies and ideas such as the interstate. Space Shuttles and tornado sirens were also created because of the Cold War era and the new threats it brought. Suburb development was the major effect of the new economic era. We developed new housing areas such as Levittown, along with the new area came new shopping malls and urbanization. There was still the threat of nuclear destruction in this time of development. Many leaders were afraid of the Domino Theory that would allow communism to spread at an alarming rate. One major battle that came from this idea was the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro. Along with the new economic and political changes came social and cultural changes. Texas and Florida were being flooded with Mexican Americans who came to work in the U.S. and then were supposed to go back to Mexico. African and Mexican Americans were fighting for their civil rights and equality. One example of Mexican Americans struggling for civil rights was Hernandez vs. Texas. African-Americans had a huge movement forward during this time. There was the Little Rock Nine, Martian Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and the Montgomery bus boycott. Throughout this hard time many minorities gained rights and equality. The Cold War era had a huge
Under the Overpass is about two friends named Mike and Sam as they travel and live as homeless men for five months. They set out to experience life on the streets in six different cities. They only took sleeping bags purchased from a thrift store, the clothes on their backs, and their guitars. They panhandled to travel from city to city. Mike and Sam lived only off of the money they earned panhandling and from shelters and food kitchens. Mike and Sam sought to gain a better understanding of the homeless community that is present all around us while facing the elements, hunger, stress, loneliness, and danger of the streets. They’re goals were to survive, grow in to their faith, and spread the love of Christ to those they came in contact with as they traveled through six cities across America.
