“There’s one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other, and that is the urgent threat of a changing climate.” - Barack Obama. Climate change has been a popular topic of discussion, because of the threat to our environment. The world will forever be changed if climate change isn’t taken into serious consideration and not in a good way. Climate change has been a popular topic of discussion, because of the threat to our environment. Climate change has had many negative effects, for example, damage to coral reefs, the increase of wildfires, and most importantly rising sea levels. The damage to our earth cannot always be undone nevertheless it can make some things disappear forever. Rising sea levels are caused by the melting of ice which is from the raising temperature in the atmosphere. When the ocean water rises land begins to disappear which puts not only the risk of land not being there, but the risk of the people living there. In the article “Global Warming Impacts” written by a group called, union of concerned scientist write “Global warming is now accelerating the rate of sea level rise, increasing flooding risks to low-lying communities…”. The people that this will be affected are low-lying communities and one of those communities is the Marshall Islands. The Marshall Islands are located near the equator in the pacific ocean and close to being sea level. Since the temperature has been warming up so much, some parts of this island are being flooded. People there are concerned. Many of the locals aren’t just concerned with their island vanishing, but with their island their culture. New York Times interviewed Linber Anej who has lived on Marshall Islands his whole life, went to a conference in Paris representing his island's concern of having to leave their homes saying “It does not make sense for us to go to Paris and come back with something that says, ‘In a few years’ time, your country is going to be underwater. We see the damage occurring now. We’re trying to beat back the sea.”. What basically is being told is that instead of trying to bring awareness to the Marshall Islands they are just giving them a solution of where they can go after they lose
Thank you for taking your time to listen to what I have to say. We all know that we are part of one of the strongest and proudest nations in the world which can make anything happen when we have our greatest minds set to do any goal. Now I am here to tell you we have a new step we must take before we move on to our future which is to put to rest a controversial topic which is climate change within our country. The reason why I bring up this topic is that every American deserve to live a full life in their pursuit of happiness in the United States of America but if the climate is endangering the daily lives of fellow Americans we must react to this threat in time before the effects become permanent to remove. This problem is becoming more noticeable
During the past several hundred years, civilization has made rapid progress in industries like air travel, automobiles, and energy production. These developments were made without consideration of the long-term effects that their emissions may have on the planet. Changing weather patterns are now wreaking havoc around the world, and scientists attribute this to human-caused climate change. During President Obama’s State of the Union address in 2015, he stated that, “No challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change,” (“Remarks by the President”). Warming temperatures caused by anthropogenic climate change have disastrous consequences that pose a threat to humanity and the environment.
addressing climate change. Global climate change means it is a global problem, so one nation or
As Earths average temperature increases every year, the discussion of climate change has become a significant topic in the scientific community. Human activities such as powering factories, running automobiles or something as simple as burning wood for heat, emit dangerous greenhouse gases. What makes these greenhouse gases so detrimental is that they absorb the heat radiating off of Earth and keep it in the lower atmosphere creating a “blanket” of warmth around the Earth’s surface. This causes a drastic increase in the Earths average temperature. Due to the rise in temperature, the polar caps have been melting faster than ever, this is dangerous not only because of the risk of floods and sea level increase but ocean water will become less saline and ecosystems will be destroyed, impacting humans just as much as marine life. In the article, Understand faulty thinking to tackle climate change by George Marshall, Marshall states that most people in our world today do not care about climate change because it will not affect them, “Which points to the real problem: climate change is exceptionally amorphous, … no deadlines, no geographic location, no single cause or solution.” (Marshall 2014). Because the author makes it clear that climate change is indeed a great plight, and fails to be acknowledged by people, it is a significant matter that should be discussed
CBS News reported that humans release around “38.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide [CO2] into the air from the burning of fossil fuels” (CBS). This is nearly 2.4 million pounds of CO2 per day. This extra CO2 traps heat from escaping earth atmosphere. Holly Shaftel, an editor for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reports in their article “Climate Change: How do we know?” that “The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century” (Shaftel). While some believe that humans are accountable for climate change others see the changes as natural. William Happer, professor of physics at Princeton
Climate change limits the opportunities that future generations have, especially the most poorest and most vulnerable. It is our duty to change how people treat/use the earth, educate, and get involved in our communities that can have a huge impact on improving the lives of the vulnerable populations affected by climate change.
The Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years. On the other hand, humans have been around for over two thousand years. The Earth has been through lots of climate change but none like the one we are experiencing. The ice glaciers in Antarctica are melting faster than ever. Sea levels are increasing more than ever while on land, we are recording record high temperatures and droughts. In addition, many places around the world are experiencing floods more than normal. These disasters have been a hot topic in the news and the United States presidential debates. There are the Democrats who acknowledges these facts and the Republican who denies these facts. Most people have accepted the fact that carbon dioxide, CO2, are the primary contribution to climate change but some people have yet accept it. I believe climate change is real.
Even if one doesn’t follow the climate change debate by their own free will, it’s almost impossible to avoid the discussion on climate change altogether. This is because climate change effects so many areas of daily life, which makes exposure to the discussion on climate change almost unavoidable. Recently, Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria ravaged parts of the Southern United States and the Caribbean. Many people felt that they have been hearing about or experiencing more hurricanes than ever before—or speculating that in general, hurricanes are becoming more powerful and damaging. Quickly, the spotlight fell on climate change. Does the changing climate have the capacity to alter nature’s biggest catastrophe? Does the rising temperature or changing composition of atmospheric gases have the potential to make hurricanes more intense and frequent? Climate change, which rises the temperature above the oceans, provides optimum conditions for the occurrence of more intense hurricanes.
“There are many different views on climate change, and how people view it. Climate change is a debated topic by many different researchers and scientists. Some people think we are causing it, some people think modern technology is causing it, and some people think that it isn’t even happening at all. Creationists don’t deny climate change, but what they do deny is, The worldview-based assumptions that determine secular scientists’ interpretations and conclusions about the evidence” (Foley, Avery. “Science Confirms Climate Change!”). As Christians we need to use the earth in ways that benefit humans because we have been given dominion over the earth. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” (New International
The knowledge of climate change has loomed over the population for generations, yet little has been done to stop it. Now humanity is faced with the question; are the effects of climate change reversible? To which the answer is, technically, yes but, realistically, no. Reversing climate change would require extreme legal action and support from world leaders, deforestation and overpopulation to halt, and a great amount of time, considering these facts one can conclude that reversing climate change is just unrealistic.
Over the years there has been a lot of controversy on if climate change is an issue that needs to be discussed and solved. There is a constant debate among scientist on if human actions are contributing the changing of earth’s climates. Climate change is defined as the change in average weather patterns for a specific region or Earth as a whole. This could include the change in an average temperature for a city or the amount a rainfall it receives (Dunbar, 2015). The main difference between weather and climate is the period of time specific patterns are recorded. Weather patterns are looked at over a much shorter period of time, meaning that these patterns are going to be more sporadic and change more frequently. Climate on the other had is recorded over a much longer period of time and usually show less drastic changes in patterns when compared to weather. Some people may argue that climate change is not an issue because Earth’s temperature is always changing do to natural effects. What people don’t realize is that human activity has effected the rate that earth’s temperature is changing, and just the smallest changes can lead to drastic consequences (Dunbar, 2015).
Climate change has undoubtedly become one of the most prominent debate topics in the world today. With that being said, there are multiple aspects of climate change currently being discussed; causes of climate change, the idea that climate change may be a hoax, and whether or not climate change affects human health are three of the many ongoing debates about climate change. Climate change is surrounded by negative connotations, but Jay Leno, former host of NBC’s The Tonight Show, shed some light on the darkness of climate change, saying "According to a new U.N. report, the global warming outlook is much worse than originally predicted. Which is pretty bad when they originally predicted it would destroy the planet.” Although his first statement is rather true, Leno manages to lighten its load with a less true, but hilarious, comment. His words force one to realize that climate change impacts everyone in any area of the health triangle, whether it be through a joke such as Leno’s, or directly through issues such as pollution and pollen; the areas of the health triangle include physical health, mental/emotional health, and social health. Therefore, climate change is a threat to all aspects of human health; social health, mental/emotional health, and physical health.
The human race, and the planet as a whole are facing many problems. Some of these problems are just minor slightly inconveniencing and many of them are leading to catastrophic irreversible damage. The most detrimental of our problems is climate change-the drastic change in global or regional temperatures-and environmental destruction.” Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods. They represent one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day: Greed (Laudato Si pp.25).” Many people believe there is no way to solve or stop these problems, but many of the works dealing with Francis and Clare offer solutions to those problem. The solution to our environmental crises lies in our ability to no longer live in excess.
There has been many research and large bodies of evidence that global warming is real and the global climate change is caused by that. As it mentioned in the article by Staurt D. Jordan this is a serious matter and it needs our awareness. There are many factors that contributes to global warming, it includes; human’s actions such as deforestation, burning fossil fuels, increase of greenhouse effect. Many scientists believe that 98% of climate change is because of human actions. This problem is not new and didn’t just occur overnight. This has been an issue for the past couple of decades. It’s getting worse as years go by and the evidence shows that earths temperature is increasing. We can see the side effects of this matter on daily bases. The ice burgs melting in the north pole which is causing see levels to rise, we are experience severe flooding near seashore towns and stronger natural disasters. Some people may not care because these issues has not affected them directly but if it’s not getting better means that it’s getting worse and it’s fair to say that the generation down the line will have to face this matter and it will not be a good situation. Global climate is not only affecting humans but also plants and animals. Agriculture and ecosystem is negatively affected by this. The change brings devastation to many living things every single day.
Climate change also known as global warming, is the rise in the Earth's surface temperatures. Even though the rise in the Earth's surface temperature may be slight it can still have a wide range of effects on ecosystems, rising sea levels, severe weather events, and droughts. A staggering amount of scientist believe that climate change is caused mainly due to the human use of fossil fuels. When fossil fuels are used, carbon dioxide is released along with other greenhouse gases into the air. Those gases trap the heat within the atmosphere. Some examples of ways humans use fossil fuels are oil, coal, and natural gas. Humans depend on theses fossil fuels to function everyday life. For example we use these fuels to heat our homes, run our vehicles, and are used in the power industry to produce electricity.
