The Joint Commission focuses on certain goals each year. For patient safety and positive outcomes, hospitals are required to follow certain standards. National Patient Safety Goals were established in 2002 to help identify areas of concern with patient safety. This group is made up by a panel of experts including nurses, doctors, pharmacists and many other healthcare professionals. These requirements are regimented in the National Patient Safety Goals and are enforced via surveys and internal inspections to ensure that healthcare institutions abide by the safety mechanisms put in place to facilitate the optimal patient outcomes and environments.

The healthcare industry consists of many strengths and weaknesses during the improvement of patient safety, efficient operations, reduction of medical errors, and ensuring that they provide timely access to all patient information. This will have to still comply with all legal guidelines as they control costs and protect patient privacy. The adoption of advanced information technology is a popular strategy being used in the healthcare industry because it allows their weaknesses to be progressively diminished as they gain and use the opportunities necessary as an analytical tool. This would allow their capabilities to be further developed with the new technologies and processes used as they unify the adoption of IT standards. In order to stay competitive within the healthcare industry, then there must be specific actions and measures that must be taken to ensure a positive outcome. This includes external opportunities to increase the capability of the IT infrastructure in a national environment as the growth of industry standards are met in order to decrease the pressured threats of legal compliance through patient trust and the high cost of IT. The growing recognition of strategic leadership often leads to both improved financial stability and contact accessibility of the system. Operations management is the organizing and controlling of the fundamental business activity of providing goods and services to customers (Encarta, 2005). In the healthcare industry, operations management generally focuses on providing a service of healthcare to patients. An organization has three basic functional areas, and theses are: finance, marketing, and operations (Operations Management, 2004, p.4). Since operations is one of the three basic functions of an organization it holds a strong significance in the healthcare industry. The contents of this paper will explain what operations management means to the writer, and why is operations management important to a healthcare organization.

Throughout this course I have learned about the various challenges that impede productivity and efficiency at today’s hospitals. These issues facing the modern healthcare organization come in varying forms from technological, staffing, and financial to name a few. There are no limits to what hospitals can face in these modern technologically savvy times. Below are the major issues that today’s hospitals are facing, though there are many facets to these topics it will be described as best as possible to meet overall challenges:

After reviewing the Office of Inspector General (OIG) Supplemental Compliance Guidelines for Hospitals I have found that there is great purpose for a compliance document in a healthcare facility. The purpose of this document in a healthcare facility is to be able to act as a guideline for healthcare facilities to consider, develop, and implement a compliance plan that meets federal regulations. Healthcare facilities have these compliance documents to help to cover and verify all that all services ordered for a patient were reasonable and necessary services for the patient to be treated accordingly and without fail. These compliance documents need to be retained to reflect that the healthcare facility’s efforts comply with Federal health care

Strategic integration combines the multitude of organizational functions into one collective functioning element. Integration allows for strategies to cope with the changing markets, policies, and procedures due to everyone being on the same page. In terms of health care, integration allows for the coordination of patient care in all aspects with the health model to achieved optimal care. With new technology, such as Electronic Medical Records (EMR), as discussed in MAN3303 – Healthcare Organization and Management, all aspects of care, from billing, medications, previous records, current care, etc. are utilized by the multiple departments. This such system is just one way that integration has provided optimal service throughout an organization.

Health care organizations that choose to convert to an electronic medical record system (EMR) have several advantages; most important it increases patient safety, efficiency, cost-effectiveness and security. Accepting such a transition also presents with its share of challenges like preparing for the required significant time obligation and resources that will make the transition a successful one. Leadership and management must create an atmosphere that will get the buy-in of all stakeholders. Providing information about the process and what methods will be best to make the conversion to an EMR system is an important aspect of the implementation

For a purchasing operation to be effective it must adhere to some key points. A purchasing operation must identify the requirements of the user, effectively and efficiently evaluate the needs of the user, and identify suppliers that will meet the needs of the use. They must also develop agreements with those suppliers, develop ordering mechanism with the suppliers and ensure payment occurs promptly and determine that the need of the user was met.
