Science fiction is broadly defined as a film about the future or alternate realities, often but not always set in space, and frequently incorporating horror elements, science-fiction movies are wildly popular among fans (Goodykoontz, 2014). As a subgenre of fantasy, science fiction enables viewers to relate to themes from an idealized alternative version of reality (Edwards, 2014). Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope is a feature-length film that fits this genre perfectly. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope unfolds as princess named Leia is held hostage by the evil Imperial forces in their effort to quell the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker and a smuggler named Han Solo team together with the lovable droid duo, R2-D2 and C-3PO, to rescue the beautiful princess and restore justice in the galaxy.

Star War, Star Trek, those are probably the names that pops into your head when you think of science fiction. However, for over a hundred years, artists and philosophers from all around the world, has never been certain of the true definition of Science Fiction. Science fiction works depict what may happen in the future as an effect of what technology and events exist presently. The worldspace of Blade Runner and the plot of the movie perfectly fit into this definition. Science fiction is a genre of fiction in which the stories often tell about science and technology of the future. In “Harrison Bergeron”, it is 2081 everyone is equal and has to wear handicaps, the person in charge of the government is Diana Moon Glampers, and Harrison Bergeron is the one to rebel and go against the law. In “Old Glory”, it’s 2041 the people in charge are the SOS and Gran-da stands up and fights for his and the countries freedom. In both of these stories in the end both Harrison and Gran-da die. Both of these stories have are packed with details of Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) and have the same theme with the way the government has changed, technology has improved, and how both articles have a character that rebels the government.

Science fiction is often written as a commentary on our world. Events that may occur in the future, things that may have been invented, technology that has advanced further than our imaginations. Books like Fahrenheit 451 and the short story of Harrison Bergeron talk about how our society could be controlled by one larger being. In order to make everyone equal, happy, and clueless. Knowledge is the power to understand, in both books it tells us how to think about how much we truly understand our society and why is the truth hidden and silenced from us.

Everything everywhere is constantly changing. People change, weather changes, plans change, everything changes; you can’t escape change. Two movies that really illustrate the concept of change are Pleasantville and Back to the Future. In both of these movies, the main characters – Marty, David, and Jennifer – are sent back into the times of the 1950s and are faced with a world completely different from their own. In Pleasantville, David and Jennifer get stuck in David’s favourite television show, Pleasantville, as the characters Bud and Mary Sue. Jennifer seems to want to stir things up, creating change throughout Pleasantville, causing things to turn to colour, while David is doing all he can to stop Jennifer from destroying their perfect world. On the other hand, in Back to the Future, Marty gets sent back in time to when his parents were his age. Unfortunately, he runs into his parents, causing his mother to fall for him, supposedly interfering with Marty’s future. All of these main characters have to deal with a lot of change – the key concept these movies have in common. While Pleasantville and Back to the Future both focus on the concept of time and change, both movies illustrate change from different perspectives. These movies also have other similar concepts, such as racism, masculinity, and the idea of the “ideal family”; however, they both differ by discussing other social issues as well.

In the world that Back To The Future takes place in is very interesting but is extremely flawed. The 1989 classic Back To The Future, Marty Mcfly traveled to 2015 to see incredible things. In the film, Mary Mcfly, hacks and exploits different technology. Our Tech has a lot of similarities. The tech that people own is compromised just like the tech in Back To The Future.

How would you like to live in a world were time travel was possible. It could be possible in a type of genre called science fiction. I believe that science fiction is an alternate reality or futuristic writing or movie, that has some form of unimaginable science. This could be time travel, aliens, uncontrollable virus, etc. Watching Unbreakable, reading The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, and reading the excerpt from World War Z by Max Brooks expanded my view on science fiction.

Movies or shows about time-travel are complicated, and never really make sense (I’m looking at you, Lost); Back to the Future guides us through potentially tricky subject matter by relying heavily – and very intelligently – on the tenets of classical narration listed above: Marty’s goals are very well-defined (to make sure his future parents meet, and then to get himself back to 1985); the chain of cause and effect is very clear: Doc Brown swindles plutonium from some Libyans → the Libyans, once they track down and shoot Doc, chase after Marty, Doc’s assistant → Marty tries to flee from the Libyans by speeding away in the DeLorean time machine that Doc has made → Marty hits 88 mph, sending him back to 1955, etc.

While these concepts are new and different to those who read Wells’s novel, the main idea that revolutionized science fiction was the introduction of the time machine. The time machine has become a staple in the science fiction genre. Many movies incorporate the idea of a vehicle that can move the characters years ahead or behind the present. Scientific fiction films tell the story of scientific creations and how they impact society. As the creations are made, the films show the destructions of each creation and where things go wrong with each product that is made. “The film, Jurassic Park was released in 1993 after the release of the book in 1990 (BookRags). The film is about a group of people who were chosen to tour an island themed park that is populated by dinosaurs. In the film are are several themes which make the film as powerful as it is today. Science fiction is growing each day. This film connect to the future as it describes how much of an impact it has on the world today. Jurassic Park is an excellent film in which in displays power in several characters, how these characters are trustworthy people, and how science fiction relates to society today.

The “Back to the future” trilogy is by far my favorite of all time; especially the first one, that movie alone is on my Mount Rushmore of movies. The trilogy is about a teenager who accidently travels back in time prevents his parents from getting married which then prevents him from being born, so now he has to figure out a way to get back to the future and get his parents back together. The entire trilogy is great; even thought it has its bad moments, but hey, what trilogy does not? The series is a clever and fun string of movies that leaves you with a good feeling after watching them. Now with that being said, when you make a movie about time travel there are bound to be some mistakes and “Back to the future” is no exception. I can go
