I this section I will succinctly touch on the historic preservation measures that are already used in full force outside of the U.S. Historic preservation methods for protecting the street artists’ works is not a new idea. The number of countries that initiate historic preservation of the culturally valuable street art murals grows every year. Switzerland, the Great Britain, and Germany are amongst the first nations to recognize famous street artists’ works and list it in their historic preservation registers. Banksy’s projects always revolve around a key idea relating to the site and time specific political and socio-economic issues. Banksy is known for condensing complex global issues, not always at the attention of the general public, and putting his stance on the issue in very simplistic terms through his art. He gained a major following across the world of all ages and socio-economic beginnings. Another aspect that makes Banksy very likable to the communities is the fact that he wants his art to be public and available to everyone in all the parts of the world, instead of just a handful of high end galleries, museums, and private collector’s cellars. Moreover, the Banksy Effect was a central force to bring attention to street art, not vandalizing and meaningless to the majority graffiti, and put it on an international art arena. Bristol is not the only city in the world embracing the street artists. Miami, Baltimore, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and many more cities are progressively embracing street art rather than repelling it. The list usually grants protection to only the monuments from the ancient eras. However, Blek Le Rat’s Madonna was awarded protected status in only three months. The work must be recognized as high-quality art and it must be representative of the time period it comes from. According to Annekatrin Merrem from Leipzig’s Office for Monument Conservation, Madonna is considered one of the last representatives of the post-reunification period, and thus, is treated as the work especially deserving of protection. Furthermore, Le Rat’s work tells a touching love story. He dedicated Madonna to the lady he was in love with, Sybille, whom he met in Leipzig and now is married to for over 20 years.
