“There are only two seasons, winter and baseball” (Veeck). For most people, baseball is a way of life, not just a sport they play or watch. The history of baseball goes all the way back to the 1800s, and is a sport played in many countries around the world. Baseball is one of America’s most popular sports, and it would not be called America’s Pastime if it wasn’t. The rules of baseball might be simple to grasp, but the game in itself is very difficult. Baseball has history that cannot be forgotten and rivalries in the American and National Leagues that cannot be ignored, these things fuel peoples burning desires within to play and watch this thrilling game. What is Baseball? “A game played on a large field by two teams of nine players who try to score runs by hitting a small ball with a bat and then running to each of the four bases without being put out” (Merriam-Webster). In baseball, you not only have someone hitting the ball, but you also have someone who pitches the ball to the batter and someone who fields the ball after it is hit. In order to get a batter or runner out, you have to tag them with the ball in your glove, catch the ball in the air, strike out the batter, or touch the base with the ball in your glove. Each batter gets four balls and three strikes which determines whether the batter walks or strikes out. These are the basic rules of baseball that have been enforced by umpires for over a century.
