TTC, standing for Toronto Transit Commission is a public transport agency which benefits and transports 2.7 million people daily by using different vehicles and services in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Some citizens of Toronto argue how the TTC pollutes and makes the environment a horrid and dreadful place, while it is actually the opposite because the TTC can help reduce the environmental damage in the city, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and benefit Toronto to make it a safer, significant, and a convenient city.
The TTC uses many vehicles to support it, such as buses, subways, streetcars, and paratransit services to help people who need to go places in Toronto. Specifically, the TTC drives 2.7 million people daily. Those people include adults, elderly, and children. The TTC has a blue seating called the Priority Seating opposed to the ones who have disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women. The TTC is also very helpful and useful to many other people especially for the ones who do not have any vehicles or any type of transportation.
Unfortunately, the TTC is

Without it, the TTC will be significantly dirtier, it will also emit more pollution followed by additional greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere than there already is. To prevent such pollution people should start by using the TTC because it will reduce the number of trips by car - which equals less greenhouse gas emissions. The atmospheric pollutants and gases caused by fuel being burnt are formed into a gas-like texture called smog. The Ontario Medical Association has calculated that 1 900 people die each year in the province because of the smog exposure. Therefore, the TTC is trying to make Toronto a cleaner place by reducing and preventing the environmental damage in the city. By using the TTC, it can also save 70 000 of fuel and remove tonnes of pollutants effectively from the atmosphere every
Three quarters of emissions in 2004 were coming from road traffic (Woodcock, p.1930, 2009). Emissions used from transportation are forecasted to increase from the year 2007-2030 by about 80% according to studies done by James Woodcock who is currently studying climate change and health from car fuels (Woodcock, p.1930, 2009). This is due to the fact that the emissions from vehicles are increasing significantly and are higher than any other energy fragment (Woodcock, p.1930, 2009). The only way to lower this percentage is to decrease the number of individual automobiles on the road and increase the number of public transit systems, starting long distance walking to work or school, carpooling or even biking to destinations. These principles would
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is an open transport office that works transport, tram, streetcar, and paratransit benefits in Toronto, the capital of the territory of Ontario in Canada. It is the most seasoned and biggest of the urban travel specialist organizations in the Greater Toronto Area, with various associations with frameworks serving its encompassing regions.
Toronto must further improve its public transit system. Firstly, improving transit reduces commute time as well as the amount of cars that are on the road. Secondly, people depend on public transit so an improvement would be a great convenience for many people. Lastly, the improvement of public transit will create less pollution in Toronto.
Everyday people in Toronto travel to places using public transportation. Without public transportation, we wouldn’t be able to go to places that are far away from us. We needed them in our everyday life but there are key problems that surfaces when using public transportation. Public transportation may seem convenient but for others it may not seem ideal for them from certain circumstances such as the cost, lack of transportation in a certain area and the delays. These make people not want to ride a public transportation which is why Toronto should improve on the public transportation to make the best interest for the people.
Transportation in the region has a long and successful past. However, public transportation has consistently taken a back seat to the personal automobile. There has been a strong core of persons who rely on public transportation to achieve mobility, and governmental
The contract also introduces new unexpected challenges to Alta and its vendors, such as hurricane Sandy and malfunctioning bikes, forcing the company to adapt and mature as a business. Now, coming back to the point of city being a major stake holder too. One of the main reasons for bikeshare program was also less pollution but sometimes vans are used to transport bikes from one station to another, which negate the air pollution reduction. One another ‘advantage’ of cycling which is also outweighed by its effect was made by Fuller: Though cycling does help one stay healthy but “the health benefits of physical activity resulting from increased cycling would outweigh the risks of collision and exposure to air pollution” ( Fuller e85). An externality city may face is “complaints from
New York City has unique benefits in that there are tremendous amounts of people who live within close proximity to each other. This has resulted in higher uses of mass transit systems (such as: subways and buses). On average, New York’s total environmental footprint is 7.1 metrics tons per person annually. This is much lower than national average of 24.5 metric tons. The city contributes 1% of the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere for the United States each year. (“Inventory Greenhouse of New York City,” 2007) (Jarvey, 2006)
The pollution is leaving our footprint rate out of control! Knowing that they have gotten rid of all the coal generators is a big reduction of the ecological footprint. Without the generators burning off the coal, the pollution will stay at a lower rate causing the footprint to decrease. It is more sustainable now than before because our city doesn't have to worry about trying to maintain the pollution levels as much as we used to and we can focus on more of the major projects.
The money goes towards building an efficient mass transit system that gives about 4 million rides a day, and it makes car buyers think twice before purchasing a vehicle that is going to cost them a fortune (Source B). Although the idea of using the money to build a mass transit system seems controversial to reducing air pollution, mass transportation, such as Singapore’s, actually emits about 62 percent less pollution per passenger mile compared to a single operating vehicle, according to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). If the U.S. government were to carry out a policy similar to this, the amount of pollution emitted by roadside transportation would drastically decrease due to the limited access of cheap vehicles and unlimited access of mass transportation.(does this work?). The positive effects of green policies have already been seen in the U.S. through the Clean Air Acts of 1970 and 1990, which were set to control pollution and are upheld by the EPA and the White House Administration, . This act
This document specifically highlights how the Gold Coast City Council is tackling the city’s issue of traffic congestion by improving the existing structure of the roads and public transport. Hopefully this will decrease the number vehicles on the road which will reduce the amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere (City of Gold Coast, 2013).
The Greater Golden Horseshoe is one of the fastest growing areas in Canada and the third fastest in North America. Modes of transportation and congestion due to the mass growing population has put stress on many people within the area. Additionally, 100000 people and approximately 80,000 jobs will be created yearly for the next 20 years (Transportation, 2016). The GTA West Transportation Corridor is a new initiative for the Golden Horseshoe area that will be able to cope with the growth of the areas involved. Because of this widespread project, many stakeholders are involved and are going to be affected.
With more people taking the bus there are less cars on the road causing less fuel emissions being put into the atmosphere. Markham has opened 12 parks, totaling 35 acres, to the public so that the trees may act as a carbon sink, storing the carbon dioxide instead of letting it be absorbed by the atmosphere (City of Markham, 2014). Markham has been and currently is restricting the construction of power plants around residential areas because while they produce their energy, a lot of greenhouse gases are emitted, including carbon dioxide (City of Markham, 2014). Provincially, Ontario has created the Greenbelt which is a piece of land located in southern Ontario that is permanently protected by the government, which means not even big clear cutting companies like Earthroot could take it down (Gerber, 2018).The Greenbelt is filled with trees that absorb the carbon dioxide in the air, then turns it into oxygen through photosynthesis without the chance of being cut down (Gerber, 2018). There have been many advertisements in media that encourage citizens to buy cars such as teslas
Over the last few decades South-Central Ontario has progressed from a Toronto based employment industry to a large geographic region with numerous amount of economic activity centres, employment and population (Transportation development strategy report, 2012). Due to the high increase in urbanization and urban sprawl, there is a high travel demand that is very dispersed throughout the GTA. Future population and employment growth in major urban centres will result in an increase in travel demand for both local communities and movement of goods between the areas located within the Golden Horseshoe (Transportation development strategy report, 2012).
Trans Canada Trail is working as hard as possible to provide the ability to bike across the country for Canada's 150th birthday . They are creating bicycle paths (1)for Canadians to ride on , spanning from (2)coast to coast . So far , the Great trail is 87% finished . Their goal is to have the great trail fully connected in 2017 which is the 25th anniversary of the trail . Most of the bike paths are already in use , but there is still 3,200 kilometers left of rural and difficult terrain to complete until it is fully connected .
If the public transportation improves, more and more people would take buses instead of driving. Then there would be less CO2 for our environment. Mohammad-Beigi, Nouri and Liaghati (2015) claim that the population in large cities is growing very fast, which means that transportation needs also increase really fast which leads to environmental problems. Therefore, in order to solve the problem, improving public transportation is a good solution. This study shows that driving cars really causes air pollution and it is harm for our environment. Phoenix is the largest city in Arizona, so the population growth in Phoenix will lead to the same problem that the three author mentioned. Improving public transportation will be helpful in decreasing the number of drivers and therefore reducing toxic emission. According to the PR Newswire Europe Improving public transportation in Brasilia (2009) claim public transportation is good because buses are more orderly, and they are safer and have less impact on the environment. It also shows that public transportation can help to reduce air pollution. Phoenix is an urban city like Brasilia, so it has a similar situation. Improving public transportation would be a good solution because it will lead to less driving. Then we will reduce exhaust gas
