Many people debate over whether Medieval Europe (500 AD-1500 AD) was a growth age or a dark age. The Term dark age came from a famous Italian scholar, Petrarch, and it means that there was violence, no new inventions, lots of diseases, war, not much trade and much more violence in the world. Based on The Black Death and The Crusades. We believe that Europe at this time was a “dark age”.
The Black Death was a major part of Europe being in a dark age. The Black death is a huge example of Disease, which proves that Europe was a dark age. According to the Black Death Document A, it states,“In all the city there was nothing to do but carry the deed to a burial.” This proves that many people died due to the Black Death. As well as the Black Death, the crusades also contributed to Europe being a dark age. The crusades were a religious war between the Christians and Muslims. According to Document A, “Some of our men (and this was more merciful) cut off the heads of their enemies; others shot them with arrows, so that they fell from the towers.” With this evidence you can see

This might be considered good and that it made the people satisfied with the government, but these rights were only give to the rich, noble men. As stated by Document B, “No man shall be forced to perform more service for a knight’s ‘fee,’ or other free holding of land, than is due from it”. These may have been helpful, but it only benefited a small handful of people. Gothic Cathedrals were extravagant buildings with impressive architecture. But, with all of these being built, it had to have costed a lot of money. As claimed by Gothic Cathedrals, “Common features of Gothic cathedrals included architectural innovations, including: large columns, high ceilings with ribbed vaults, flying buttresses, and large stained glass windows”. With all of these amazing features the Gothic Cathedrals would be
The term “dark ages” comes from Petrarch, who was an Italian scholar that lived after the dark ages, and compared it to the classical era. Medieval Europe happened from 500 AD to 1500 AD, also known as the medieval period in Europe. It is called “the dark age” because of the disease, famine, murder, chaos, and death that happened during that time.
There is many examples of evidence to support how Europe wasn’t in a dark age. To support this claim there are some examples. The Government ,The Rise of University, and the Gothic Cathedrals shows that Europe was not in a dark age. One reason Europe was not in a dark age was because if it was in a dark age they wouldn't know to stand up for themselves. They also had a lot of money, even though King John took it all proving that they were not in a dark age. They were also beginning to request laws so they can have some rights. According to the Black Death Documents,"To all free men of our kingdom we have also granted, for us and to our heirs for ever, all the liberties written out below, to have and to keep for them and their heirs.”Another
Causing so many deaths this disease will forever be known as the Black Death. The Black Plague, also known as the Black death, came to Europe in 1347 and ended in 1351. There are many different stories about how the Black Plague came to be. Some people believe that the black plague was spread by sailors coming from a journey through the Black Sea. They were heading to a port in the Mediterranean to trade their goods. When the boat docked, many people went towards the boat to see what these men had brought. To their surprise, almost all of the sailors were dead; those who were not dead were extremely sick. Boils that oozed blood and pus were all over their bodies, along with other symptoms including
The general health and wellbeing of the Middle Ages was very poor, mostly as a result of the Black Death. The Black Death, also commonly known as the Black Plague or the Plague, was a widespread disease that killed an estimated 17 to 30 million people between the years of 1346 through 1353. It is widely thought to have originated in Central Asia and eventually made its way to Europe. The symptoms of the Plague appeared in the first few days of infection. At first it starts with flu-like symptoms, such as headache, a fever, chills, nausea, and vomiting. Also, the victim may experience back pain, muscle soreness, and sensitivity to light. After the second or third day, buboes appear. Buboes are swollen lymph nodes which look similar to a large
In fourteenth-century Europe, the Black Plague disrupted most of European society devastating many. The Black Plague was devastating to European society economically, demographically, and morally. The plague spread as devastatingly as it did because of the continuous spread via trade, and inadequate medical knowledge. One of the major consequences of the plague was anti-Semitism.
The time period between 400 AD and 1400 AD was not a Dark Age for Europe and not a time of cultural decay and decline. It was not a Dark Age for the following reasons: Cathedrale Notre Dame’s construction, the laws of currency that were established, and how Europe prospered during this time period. Cathedrale Notre Dame’s construction showed how far culturally Europe got by the late Middle Ages. “Common features of gothic Cathedrals included architectural innovations. (Document G: Gothic Cathedrals)” This piece of text shows me that Europe developed their architectural design; gothic architecture which originated in France.
Through history there have been devastating events during time periods, which eventually lead to positive outcomes, after all the sorrow comes the miracle everyone hoped for. As they say “there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.” As a matter of fact that is what happened during The Fourteenth century, it was one of the most devastating centuries, filled with horrible events, the outcome of those events led to the reshaping of Europe and Asia through trends and events. In Europe, during the Fourteenth Century, the population was soaring and there was surplus in the food supply.
The “Dark ages” was found by an Italian scholar, Petrarch, in the 1300s. The term Dark Age was used to explain the period (movie talk-dark ages). The Dark Age could be in a growth age or a dark age. This is applied to “dark” and “light”. This can be argued by the evidence of what is going on during 500AD-1500AD. The debate between Europe being in a Dark Age or growth age is based off of how well the evidence supports the statement and this judgment is clearly stated that Europe is NOT in a dark age based on all the supported evidence.
The Black Death found its way into Western Europe through the trade routes from Asia to Europe. The rats, or more specifically the fleas on said rats, would ride the ships into the heart of Europe, spreading the plague to the unaware citizens. The reason it spread so quickly was due to the intense overpopulation of Europe in the Late Middle Ages. During this time, the population actually outnumbered the food supply and available jobs; therefore, Western Europe was left poor and hungry. Faced with economic depression, overpopulation, famine, and bad health, the immunity of Western Europe suffered greatly, leaving it wide open to contagion. Naturally, cities and places with high population densities faced the most risk of infection.
In order to understand the significance the Black Death played in bringing about the decline in population in the second half of the fourteenth century, a number of issues need to be considered. To begin with, the Black Death’s significance should be looked at, including its victims, the rural and urban population, and recovery in the 1350s. Also, we have to look at the impact of later plagues, and the age and gender specificity of them. However, we should also look at other factors that affect the population, such as fertility and change in marriage trends. Given the particular question we should also look at the pre plague population to get a better understanding of the population in general. It is only by studying these issues that we can
It is true that the effect the Black Death had on society at the time was not just reduction in population numbers. The Black Death was a disease carried by fleas and rats. It reached Europe around 1347. Some internet sites say it killed 20 million people in Europe which was one third or more of its population at the time contrasting to other sites which say it killed 25-50% and some that say 25 million. We don’t know for sure how many people were killed but we can have a rough estimate that about 20-25 million of Europe’s population died. The drop in population was a serious affect although it wasn’t the only one. Even though most of the issues that occurred as of the Black Death were linked back to the decrease in population the Black Death
According to Petrarch he coined that Europe was in " Dark Age " during 500- 1500. Due to many negative events that were happening. According to document B it gives examples of what was happening during the Middle Ages. Some examples are highway robbers, decline in trade, and travel became dangerous. Also in document D it states that concerning false money they had ordered that he who has been proved to have made it shall have his hand cut off.
Document 1 and Document 6 both provide supporting evidence that lead to why the Middle Ages should be referred to as the Dark Ages. Document 6 states, “Europe suffered a decline in commerce and manufacturing, in education, in literature and the arts, and in almost all that makes possible a high civilization. Cities grew smaller and in some cases practically disappeared, and western Europe became a region of poverty-stricken farming communities, each virtually isolated from the rest of the world.”
During the time period of 600-1200, Western Europe was experiencing what is known as The Dark Ages. This time of feudalism and separation came shortly after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. However during the time period of 1200-1450, also known as the High Middle Ages and Early Renaissance, Western Europe experienced many continuities and changes as its society began to progress. They began to see religion in a different light and also develop socially. Yet, some aspects of society stayed as they were in the Dark Ages.
The Dark Ages is a period of time created from the Western Roman Empire’s destruction. The fall of a massive empire made a hole in history because during this time no writings, art, or leaders were born. People were stuck in a void where not a single advancement is made. No civilization or city group will show until the Middle Ages, or medieval period.
