Where do we look to find meaning in the meaningless? One of the most well know pieces of art in the Chinese New Art movement “A Book from the Sky” is a mixed media installation comprised of volumes of book laid across the floor, sheets of paper attached to the walls along with bellowing scrolls that hang down from the ceiling. The one interesting attribute that they all have in common is that they are filled to the brim with complete nonsensical gibberish. Artist Xu Bing spent four years creating his own false Chinese characters for the project. He didn't write them by hand instead he opted to carve them out and stamp the paper in the way of the centuries old traditional fashion even going so far has to hand bind the books as well, yet not a single one of his hand crafted books or scrolls means anything. …show more content…
Xu was born in the year 1955 therefore he grew up during the end of the cultural revolution during Mao Zedong and Communism when intellectualism and individuality were still very much frowned upon. Back during this time he showed promise in the arts specifically the area of printmaking and calligraphy. Like most with artistic talents they were expected to utilize this skill and use it especially for the state as even some young artists were even being trained in propaganda. Xu however relocated to the country side for two year practicing his printmaking skills and eventually he returned to Beijing and joined the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1987. Coinciding in the same year a new art movement in China prevailed sometime after Mao die which was soon know as The Contemporary Chinese Art
Can you imagine being sold to someone that consistently beats you every day and also makes you sell your body for money that you don’t even get too keep. In “Half the Sky”, the author Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn gives the readers a glimpse of the oppression of women worldwide. “Half the Sky” is one of the most important books I have ever read. I would highly recommend this book to everyone. The first three pages I read already had me in tears. What makes this book so outstanding to me was reading and learning about all these different women and girls that has suffered in a way I didn’t think people were doing. Some of the stories were dealt with sex trafficking, maternal death, attacks on women, and not sending girls to school because of income. But the moving portrayals of the survivors improve the issues. Many of these survivors are healthy and doing very well. I never thought most of these stories that was in the book was going on in the world.
As the empire becomes stabilized, Ming dynasty reached a big advance in expression in art. In the book Masterworks of Ming and Qing Painting from the Forbidden City, it is said that “The reigns of the Hongwu, Yongle and Xuande emperors were relatively strong and well-organized, supported by a strong agricultural base in the south below the Yangtze river, and by a particularly large and efficient merchant fleet (Howard 22).” and during that time “…great advances in
The earliest printing in China was the block printing method in the first Century B.C., where the individual sheets of paper were pressed against wooden blocks that had text and illustrations carved into them. This process could print hundreds and even thousands of copies, this technology played a significant role in promoting the spread of culture. A block carver named Bi Sheng made movable types with clay during the period from1004 to 1048. This method each type was carved with one character and the types could be set independently according to contents of different articles. After printing, the movable types could be reused and this improved technology is called movable-type printing. (LAN, 2008)
Jon Krakauer’s group, on April 16th, began their 2nd acclimatization starting from base camp and climbing up too camp one. Hall, the group leader decided that he would like the climbers to stay at camp one for two nights, camp two for one night, then after that, go back to the base camp. The next morning they left for camp two, which is about four miles above where they were at camp one. On his way up, Krakauer sees a dead body. The dead body stuns him for a little while but then he continues on up the mountain towards camp two. The group makes it up to base two. The altitude greatly affected Krakauer he mentioned how all that he could do was rest in his tent with his head in his hands. The next day, after feeling a little nit better, climbs a little higher than camp two to work more on his acclimatization. While on his climb he comes across another dead body but this one does not affect him as greatly as the previous one. Jon’s group began to climb; the wind chill was forty degrees below zero. Jon, before he left, expected the sun to heat him up so he underdressed and then during the hike, became too cold to continue as his hands and feet were completely numb. Everyone from Jon’s group, except for Doug who is injured, make their next attempt to reach camp three. Jon Krakauer makes it to camp three, finally. Camp three is about one mile, vertically, below the summit of Mt. Everest. Jon’s group then descends down to the base camp again. Every on in his group is physically
Richard Rodriguez writes in his essay, “The Lonely, Good Company of Books,” how he once struggled with the concept of being “educated” while studying in school (191). It is true that society has developed the idea that to be educated means to be successful in life, but is this really true? Education is certainly a contributing factor to one’s future, however, what exactly does it mean to be “educated” in today’s world? Although the times have changed and the world has become more modernized, learning has remained as important, if not more so, as it had when it was first discovered that it was essential to function in an advanced society. Being educated means that they know the basic knowledge, are able to apply those skills to different situations, and use them to comprehend and give back to the community.
In The Giver movie and The Giver book, there were lots of differences. Just to name a few that stood out a lot was that in the movie they skipped the beginning, Asher didn’t try to stop Jonas when he tried to escape and there was also no map. Therefore these differences are a big part because since they are being left out we are seeing something new in the movie that we didn’t and did see in the movie. For example, since they skipped the beginning they didn’t talk about when Jonas had a dream about Fiona and the wanting to do something. Also, when Jonas tried to run away from the society Asher wasn’t even mentioned in the story. Lastly, like how Asher was not mentioned in the story neither was the map that The Giver gave to Jonas. These
Lord of the Flies by William Golding and A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah are novels that address different aspects of humanity’s darker side. Lord of the Flies suggests that an extreme obsession for power can lead to a decay of morals and the acceptance of savagery; in contrast, Beah in A Long Way Gone demonstrates that fear and hatred, while they may drive people to commit violent acts, can be overcome with the help of surrounding care and support. The two texts express clear differences in that while Golding creates a fictitious story to describe how greed can simulate the descent into barbarism and the disintegration of the relationship of seemingly inseparable friends, Beah details through his autobiography his personal experiences
Leaders play an important role within a group. A good leadership can help a group perform better, where as a bad leadership could ultimately bring the group down. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding tells the story of a group of boys on an island left alone to survive without adult supervision after their plane crashed. The boys quickly elected Ralph to be the leader and Ralph appointed Jack to be the leader of the hunters. After a while, various accidents caused a power struggle between Jack and Ralph, which leads to Jack overthrowing Ralph in a coup. In the novel, the boys needed a leader that could help them stay alive and ultimately have them rescued. Ralph is an excellent leader for the boys since Ralph display responsibility and initiative.
There are always people who, in a group, come out with better qualities than others.

As he has found his own style of work, it may not be as traditional as more of the other Chinese pieces of art, but continues to connect his work with ancient China. For his work he draws on a wide array of symbols and traditions: parts of feng shui, Chinese philosophy and medicine, images of tigers and dragons, and gunpowder. He was also influenced
In the next room I came across a very unique and interesting collection of pieces. If you especially like or have any interest in calligraphy, then you are going to love what Hongmo Ren has done. Calling it REN-script, Ren has created what he calls a calligraphy and linguistic “experimentale.” Consisting of seven English and six French pieces, he has combined the art and beauty of calligraphy with writing of equal stature. In ten of his pieces he elaborates on the beauty of nature during various seasons and includes a complete verse from the Book of Genesis. The rest of the pieces are large single word depictions again in calligraphy with intricate detail.
In China, there are two criteria in determining whether a property should be protected or not: originality and reproducibility. We must first understand the different nature of Chinese characters. Different calligraphers used different techniques and styles to produce great works of art in many different literary or artistic forms. Because of the more intricate nature of characters and the more number of strokes than in any other character system, Chinese character fonts are very unique for its complex structures. Advanced complexity left more space for artistic creations and variations, which is one of the beauties of the character system, to ancient calligraphers and also requires much “independent and original effort” for typographers that create new Chinese typeface. It is quite obvious that forgery was a tremendous problem in the past and is still is, and many calligraphers and collectors of calligraphy pieces tried to find ways to figure out original pieces and to find methods to show that they really created a piece (QiaoSharon). Common ways to detecting forgeries are: tracing, copying, imitating, hacking, altering, and fabricating (The Palace Museum).
My handwriting teacher, Mr. Gu, thought that my handwriting was good enough for me to begin learning the art of Chinese Calligraphy. It was a special honor, as many classmates desired to
