Buddhism : Attributions And Positive Responses To Buddhism

Buddhism is an ancient religion, founded in sixth century (B.C.E.) India. Its spread to China was induced by many factors, one of which is trade along the silk roads during the Han Dynasty. After, it continued to spread for several centuries both with positive and negative responses. Some of the positive responses include acceptance of the religion by rulers, attribution of Buddhism in restoring social order, and adaptation of the religion to facilitate its expansion. However, a few of the negative responses of Buddhism are its contradiction of Confucianism, Buddha seen as an outsider, and the disruption of working tradition by Buddhism.
The spread of Buddhism in China after the fall of the Han Dynasty allowed many to convert, which as a result caused many positive responses about its spread into China. For instance, a positive response is the acceptance of the religion by imperial rulers. During the authority of the Tang Dynasty in China, the emperor ordered “the finger bone of the Buddha” to be placed in his palace (Document 4). The emperor keeping this as a relic conveys his acceptance of the religion, as many that were against the religion viewed the bone as evil and begged for it to be destroyed. Moreover, another positive response to Buddhism is the belief its teaching allowed for the restoration of social order after period of time of instability in China.
