Bullying Teasing and playing around are all part of growing up; however, what happens when it happens over and over. The Hernando County Code of Conduct defines bullying as: systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress, or physical behavior, including and threatening, insulting, or dehumanizing gesture, by a student or adult, that is severe or pervasive enough to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive educational environment; cause discomfort or humiliation; or unreasonably interfere with the individual’s performance or participation (p. 28, 2015)…
Children are going to play and some situation they may not get along, an argument can occur, stomping off and not playing can occur; this is not a form of bullying. Children that purposefully inflict verbal or physical distress over again can be a form of bullying. In respects to school teacher/staff involvement within a bullying incident, teacher must uphold “loco parentis.” According to K. Alexander, “schools, as corporate entities, and/or school administrators and teachers generally have a qualified or conditional privilege that protects them against liability unless their standard of care to protect students in not commensurate with the duty (p.492, 2015). If teachers are aware of an issue, it is their duty to tell administration, guidance counselor, and/or document an incident. Learning can occur when the basic need of safety can be met.
