- Human Resource Management has replaced personnel management, in most large organisations.
- Personnel management is a narrower area of management concerned only in recruiting and keeping employment records.
- HR Managers contribute to the strategic and operational level, and previous personnel managements have had to take on broader tasks within the organisation, and HR is now a fully integrated function of the organisation.

- Staff can be arranged under three groups of characteristics: Personal (primary): Age, gender, mental and physical ability, nationality, race, sexual orientation. Personal (secondary): Beliefs, educational level, marital status, socio-economic status, values Organisation-related: Casual/Part time/ Full time status, position in the hierarchy.
- Management of diversity is related to equal employment opportunity; however effective management goes beyond the basic requirements. Management sees diversity s a positive and aims to harness it for business
Managing Diversity in the workplace is more than just an acquired skill, it is "a way of thinking" (1). It involves creating an environment that allows all employees to contribute to organizational goals and experience personal growth. The key is to help employees reach their full potential by creating an environment that will allow them to be motivated and productive and ultimately, be beneficial for the organization.
The way in which an organization tackles diversity determines its negative or positive outcome. All the 5 companies agreed that diversity has contributed to their success. Some barriers were identified in managing diversity like the difficulties faced by women in managing the work and family, fear of discrimination, resistance to change, diversity is not seen as an organizational priority, resistance to change and unsupportive working environment for diverse employees. Diversity contributes to more productivity but if not properly managed could hinder success.
This paper covers diversity management theory and how it affected my academic experience. Diversity management is an important and rapidly growing concern in many workplaces. Managers want to insure a safe environment for their employees and increase productivity, awareness, and morale. If the employees are happy, there will be more successes within the company. People respond to positive and guiding help or advice better than discrimination and down talk from a boss. The training in place for managers deals with cultural, gender, and social diversity. By enhancing the workplace and creating a team environment, companies can unleash their potential.
Since public and private organization uses managing diversity concept ,this chapter addresses how managing diversity concepts is use several ways such as organizational and management level, group performance, group dynamics, group perspectives, and individual identity.
