Running Head: RESEARCH PAPER: CATERPILLAR 1 Research Paper: Caterpillar David M. Adkison American Military University RESEARCH PAPER: CATERPILLAR Abstract The topic of my research was the global management expertise and effectiveness of the company Caterpillar Inc., a global leader in the production and manufacturing of construction and mining equipment. I researched the company's website for core information and sought information outside the company for its global perspective. What I found 2 was that Caterpillar is more than just a number on the Fortune 500 list; it is a company committed to its vision and goals. Their focus on customer satisfaction is their driving force for global dominance, and the communication with …show more content…
In 1950 they established their first overseas subsidiary in Great Britain. Now, their global reach serves customers in more than 180 countries and coupled with their dealer locations, they serve more than 500 locations world-wide. This type of global presence is fundamental to their success in the global RESEARCH PAPER: CATERPILLAR market. The closer they are to their customer, the stronger their customer relationship becomes. This element of customer satisfaction is essential to their success and to 5 their future, because the more successful their customer becomes, the more successful they become. This commitment to their customer is evident in all aspects of their business. One of their goals over the next five years is to become the global leader everywhere they do business. They claim their customers will make more money with them than with their competitors (Caterpillar Company, 2011). Their supply chain and distribution system give them a competitive advantage over their competitors, and they have a superior business model with proven results. Their mission is to "enable economic growth through infrastructure and energy development, and to provide solutions that protect people and preserve the planet" (Caterpillar

Every year farmers’ crops are subject to droughts, floods, storms, and so much more. But one of the biggest problems that seem to be plaguing the agricultural industry, specifically the cabbage and lettuce industry, is pests. One pest in particular is the diamondback moth, and it has been wreaking havoc all over New York. However, all is not lost; there still will be cabbage and lettuce in the grocery store. The reason for this? Scientists have come up with an effective new way to manage the diamondback moth, and it isn’t reliant on pesticides. It uses genes. But, best of all, it won’t be one farmer paying for one treatment. It will be a universal movement, and this movement has the possibility to revolutionize the crucifer, or, in more simple terms, the cabbage and lettuce market.
There were many variables in the population of the peppered moth, but the main factors is the environment around them. This environment changed severely with the industrial revolution and the pollution from many of the major cities at the time. At first without the effect of the black pollutants, the peppered moths would struggle on white trees they made their homes as they were very visible by predators. This changed when they could easily blend in against the blackened trees, and their lighter cousins started to struggle in this newfound environment providing a surplus of food for the Peppers and they thrived.
One could say they set the mark for everyone to target in customer service. And they make it the core of their marketing strategy. (Schoultz, 2013)
Caterpillar, America’s best representation of corporate sustainability! In researching this company I found that Caterpillar to be one of America’s best. I would like to invest a quarter of a million dollars into the Powering the Future Sustainably program; Focusing on the L.E.A.D. project (Leadership Excellence in Accountability and Development). LEAD is a program within Caterpillar, which is made up of three eight man teams that are to analyze and solve existing problems in the company while trying to ensure sustainability (which by default has become the core value of the company).

Caterpillar has always been a market seeker since its inception. Within a span of ten years, it expanded its business from the USA to Europe and Australia by supplying machinery for the World War 1. As it entered the construction industry, its influence in the market grew and so did its market share. After reaping the benefits of operating in developed economies, caterpillar started expanding its business to Asia and Africa. Although these markets were heavily dependent on the developed economies for their growth, the gradual rise of the BRICS nations who started acquiring more share in the world trade made them an attractive investment. When the global economic crisis loomed over the world’s most powerful economies, businesses in these countries became nervous and they were to incur huge losses. On the other hand, emerging markets adapted very well to the global economic crisis and proved to be a safe haven for companies. This is where caterpillar’s strategy of constant market seeking ensured that they were virtually unaffected by the global financial crisis. On the contrary, analysts saw a rise in the value of caterpillar during this period. While economies like Europe and the USA were experiencing depression in 2008, caterpillar reported an all-time record for its sales, revenue and profit per share. Its sales increased by 30 percent outside North America while it could squeeze only 7 percent growth from North America. This

While analyzing this case, I was aware of Caterpillar expanding its network of foreign manufacturing operations. Looking at what is unethical about this is the jobs that are being taken away from the United States citizens and giving them to others in foreign countries. Major U.S. companies have been known to export their operations to foreign countries for their low labor costs. Caterpillar is an industry leader when it comes to construction and mining equipment. The demand for their product is booming right now due to the continued building of infrastructure and the success of the housing market. As the demand for their product continue, Caterpillar has to increase production in its manufacturing facilities to meet the needs of its customers. Caterpillar expanded 102 of its manufacturing facilities outside of North America (Hill.) That is a very large number when considering how many American citizens could have those job opportunities if those facilities were in the United States. It is Caterpillar’s social responsibility to consider the well-being of the communities throughout the United States in which it conducts operations. Exporting its operations to foreign lands gives the impression of not caring about the citizens of America. Caterpillar is following the trend of numerous U.S. companies that have that hire and invest more overseas than in the United States. General Electric, Apple Inc, and IBM are just a few of the hundreds of U.S. companies that export their
93 years later, the company sets up networks across the country with its headquarters in Pawtucket, Rhode Island where, it was founded. Being a family business from the start, most of the company’s top positions are controlled by family members. This has had a positive impact on the growth of the company considering the role they have in the corporation and the input on product ideas.
