Should students be able to use cell phones during class periods? This is a question a lot of students and parents have asked themselves. The invention of cell phones started a debate for many schools. Many schools accept the use of cell phones but experience a lot of frustration over them. There are many reasons for and against the use of cell phones in schools. People who support cell phone use in schools are usually teenagers. People who disagree with cell phone use in schools are usually teachers or parents, who think cell phones are a distraction. A lot of students see cell phones as a useful device but many see them as a distraction during class. Throughout this essay you'll read about the pros and cons regarding cell phones …show more content…
Our teachers are supposed to be our role models, shouldn't they know more? To make it easier in life we all should be able to use cell phones in class. Some people ask themselves, "If cell phones are to keep in touch with your buddies, then what is recess for?” Yes, recess is a chance where you and your peers socialize, but in class don't you need to ask your buddy questions that you don’t understand?- (ie. math problems, homework and etc… ), but at the same time you don't want to be rude and yell their name out loud and disturb other students from working. So, using a cell phone to text message is a great idea to keep in contact with your friends. Thirdly, cell phones are just another item, and banning them makes them more irresistible to people, especially teenagers. "As a student, I understand that cell phones are distracting while a teacher is trying to help the students--but at the same time, I believe they become even more distracting to the class as a WHOLE when teachers make a huge deal out of trying to take a phone away or punish a student for having a phone out."(Answer.yahoo.com-2009)Cell phones could be one of the 5 distractions-talking, playing, throwing, devices, and physical actions. With cell phones you're making less distraction to the class because you’re not disturbing anyone but yourself and that’s a good
Most schools do not allow the use of cell phones in school or in class, so the school feels like changing their policy of cell phone use might be a bad idea. Students could take advantage or miss use the privilege of phones in class. There will always be students who act out in class, but the school must discipline those who do and reward those who do not.
So why would they want to listen to a teacher talk if they can talk about something they actually want to talk about just as easily? When students are paying attention to their cell phones instead of the teacher, their grades will eventually go down, and it will be harder for them to get jobs later in life. Cell phones during school hours could really destroy the learning environment and many other opportunities.
One reason why cell phones should be prohibited in the classroom is that it’s a HUGE distraction. According to school teacher Miriam Morgenstern, “the texting, tweeting, and Snapchatting during class time are ‘an incredible distraction, and makes it much more difficult to teach’” (qtd. in Matchan). Not only is it difficult for the teacher to teach, but it’s a poor distraction for the cell phone users themselves. Also, according to Joni Siani, a Braintree psychologist and author, “they’re distracted and not really engaged with their lesson plan” (qtd. in Matchan). So that is very true, and, most definitely what you’d expect out of a teenager. Some people argue that, “73% of teachers said their students use phones in the classroom to complete assignments”(Higgins). But many of those teachers don’t actually realize the amount of students that still get distracted from social media, games, etc. when the teacher isn’t looking. And if the user is on he or she’s phone during class, they can’t learn anything because they are actually focusing their
According to huffingtonpost an average teenager spends over one third of their day on their phones and kids ages 8-12 also spend nearly 6 hours a day on their smartphones. In addition, non-class purposes at least 10 times a day. Banning phones also shows respect to the teachers and students who would not like to be distracted throughout their day in class. In addition to that, in 2015 a history teacher at Lowell High School quits her job after her frustration with students and their cellphones. After 20 year of teaching she stated at that texting, tweeting and snapchatting during class time are “and incredible distraction, and makes it much more difficult to teach.”
Cell phones are the number one essential that people carry on a day to day basis. It is the necessary device to help connect with one another. The school board states that cellular device should be expelled completely from school grounds since it may distract other students from learning in a school environment. Banning cell phones completely on school grounds is not the right idea to help solve the problem because of the students safety and the ability to communicate with their parents or guardians from an after school activity or calling for a necessary thing that they need.
Cell phones should not be banned at school for many reasons. One reason cell phones should not be banned is in the case of an accident or emergency. In the article, Cell Phones in School: An Overview by Beverly Ballaro and Jill Ginsburg, it states that “ 84% of parents felt that banning cell phones from school property was unacceptable and that 99 percent wanted their students to be able to call or be called in case of an emergency.”
Many teachers believe that cell phones don’t belong in a classroom because there are several disadvantages. An example maybe a student who uses a cell phone in class has no intension in listening or paying attention to the teacher. This student has a short attention span who cares about socializing more than his/her education. Cell phones can be very disruptive; they can invade people’s privacy and can also be used as harassment or bullying. The usage of cell phones is creating a huge problem particularly when they are used in school.
To begin with i'm going to state my reasons why cell phones should not be allowed during school hours.Cell phones shouldn't be allowed during school because it's a huge distraction and it creates problems involving social media. You are suppost to go to school to gain knowledge
Although cell phones could be distracting in class, they should be allowed because they have many benefits in education, activity on them can be controlled, and they also provide benefits to the teachers of the classrooms.
Cellphones could be so much simpler at schools. There are an abundance of rules into play. Students get the device taken on a daily. Many teachers today would like the ban lifted so that the phone can be used as a teaching tool and not labeled as a distraction. (Rapp, David. “Lift the Cell Phone Ban.” Scholastic, Scholastic Administrator, 2008. Accessed 14 May 2017.) If a U.S law were passed, the ban would be lifted. School systems fail to realize that phones are more useful than the outdated books. When there are fewer resources in schools, there are more students needing to use the devices. Why not put the devices up for the test? Phones are here for a reason.
To add along, students should not be able to use their cell phone during school hours is because they are a distraction. Students can not comprehend if they are texting during class. Children could be on games, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram while they are supposed to be learning. For example, a student's cell phone just beeped while the teacher is teaching. The cell phone just distracts the other students and the teacher. Cell phones are not only distracting to students, they are distracting to teachers while they are supposed to be teaching the students. The teacher has to stop teaching and wait for the student to turn off his/her phone which then causes the whole class to have to stop. Another way that cell phones can be a distraction is that most students like to watch videos on their cell phones while the teacher is teaching. Some of the videos may be inappropriate and cause the student to get into serious trouble. An example of this would have to be a
Many places in society are setting policies on digital device. The principal at my school has also set policies on banning cell phones in school. Students should not be permitted to use cell phones in school. Using cell phones during school allows students to cheat. Students will be more distracted by cell phones and pay less attention to the teacher and to the lesson. Students have a higher chance of getting in trouble if they use cell phones in school rather than if they are not allowed to use digital devices in school.
Cell phones cause negative effects and disturb students from learning. Students need to get an education and learn more about school work. Students and teens will worry way much more about their phones than their school work. Cell phone are a big disturbance and need to stay off the school property. Many students love to research things they do not need to research and that is one reason why students do not need their phones during school. Cell phones should not be allowed or used during school hours. Students just need to worry more about their school work and do not need to worry about their phones. Students need to be banned and their teachers need to take their student's
Lastly, if we use our cell phones in school we would, of course, have to use them under certain restrictions. One of the main reasons administrators and faculty don’t approve of cell phone use in school is because they are afraid of cheating during tests. They are also afraid of distractions during lessons and when it’s time to work on worksheets and homework. We would obviously have to keep our cell phones away during these times. We would also have to keep them on silent or vibrate so that our cell phones don’t annoy or distract other students. But don’t worry; this doesn’t cut out all of our cell phone use time! If we use our cell phones in school, we would able to use them at lunch, break, and any free time during class.
Today, everywhere we look around there is more than likely going to be a phone in somebody's hand. This article looks at education and the use of phones, if they should be allowed or not. If cell phones won't be aloud then another question they look at is if any technology should be used. It is so common for youth to be on their phones and this talks about whether or not it would be a distraction or if it could help. The main focus on this article is that the "administrators often are concerned about inappropriate use of cell phones in schools and this is the major cause of restricting their use" (Obringer and Coffey, p. 10). As this article talks about whether or not is should be used as a learning tactic, it also gets into gender differences. They look into which gender is more likely to use the phone as a distraction rather than the learning they were assigned to do if it was allowed in the school. Another question that popped up was if the students even knew what their school's policy on cellphones was. By the end of this you will see their look on whether or not it is worth using any kind of technology in the education system.
