Charles Lindbergh's Attack On Pearl Harbor

On December 7, 1941, one of the biggest disasters in United States history occurred. Truthfully, this was and is, “A date which will live in infamy.”(Costello), but for the trickery used by the Government and Franklin D. Roosevelt. To him this was a game of strategy and self-defense. Roosevelt sacrificed over 2400 American naval soldiers’ lives, thanks to his power as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. By over-looking the facts of an attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor, he was able to control both the political and economic systems of the United States. Most of American life before the Pearl Harbor bombing believed in the idea of not participating in political or economic relations with other countries. The only way United States countrymen would stand up and fight in what was know as then as Europe’s War.

It all started the morning of December 7, 1941 when Japanese leaders decided to bomb the United States. Families were then broke apart and things became much more complex in the lives of Americans. Pearl Harbor was not “just a bombing,” but in reality it is so much more. This bombing had a great impact on the whole world for World War II. The bombing of Pearl Harbor had many situations before the bombing, during the bombing, and after the bombing.

Introduction. I chose this battle because I had been hearing about the attack on Pearl Harbor, but I did not know much about it. This paper talks about the countries that fought in this battle, where the battle was fought, what the geography was like during the battle, what the weather was like, what happened during this battle, how many casualties occurred, other things I learned about the battle, who won the battle, and how the battle was important to WWII.

The United States’ government had not disclosed a Pearl Harbor story to the public--that the U.S. had failed to act on advance information about a planned Japanese attack. Japan 's move against the United States was audacious enough to be considered no more than a slight possibility, although the potential for an attack had been widely discussed.

Yet again, Americans called for isolationism and neutrality as they believed America should focus on ending the Great Depression, not worrying about and dealing with the international issues of other nations and peoples. By analyzing Document 5, it is clear that many Americans still believe in isolationism during the Great Depression. Bennett Champ Clark states in his Defense of the First Neutrality Act that “the desire to keep the United States from becoming involved in any war between foreign nations seems practically unanimous among the rank and file of American citizens.” Americans influenced the US foreign policy yet again as the First Neutrality Act was passed in 1935. By analyzing Document 6, it is clear that President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the choices he made were still influenced by isolationist sentiment as he states in his Quarantine Speech that “it is my determination to adopt every practicable measure to avoid involvement in war.” However, it is clear in President Roosevelt's speech that he knew that entering the war was inevitable as he states that the “peace of the world and the welfare and security of every nation, including our own is today being threatened by that very thing (war).” Although the United States tried its best to not enter the second World War for many years, it could not avoided by the end of 1941. Just before 8 a.m. on December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. The barrage lasted just two hours, but it was devastating: The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan; Congress approved his declaration with just one dissenting vote. Three days later, The Japanese allies Germany and Italy also declared war on the United States, and again Congress reciprocated. The U.S. decision to enter World War II was not one which was hastily made. World War I had been simmering for some time, over two years in fact, prior to the U.S. entrance into this bloody affair. Endless debate had occurred at all levels of our government, and even among the general population, to the appropriate role of the U.S. in this war. As one factor after another combined to make U.S. involvement more of a probability, one factor in particular would prove to be the final straw which would topple the decision making process from one of restraint to one of action. This factor was, of course, the Japanese bombing at Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was attacked on the morning of December 7, 1941 and would prove to be Japan’s greatest mistake, a mistake for which the consequences would extend throughout the war and well into Japan’s post-war future. More immediately, however, it would serve to drop the restraint which the U.S. had maintained as the war had raged on in Europe for over two years. The U.S. would have entered WWII even if the Japanese did not attack Pearl Harbor. The axis powers, Germany and Italy, were gaining to much power in Europe and then Japan decided that they were going to join with the axis powers, this was not settling well with the U.S.

There were about 3,500 casualties from the bombing, and more than 2,300 of them were deaths. The attack beached or sank 12 American battleships, and nine others were severely damaged. A total of 160 aircraft were demolished and 150 were damaged (“The Japanese Attacked Pearl Harbor”). Japan was planned to wipe out the Philippines, the East Indies, Malaya, and Burma. Their only concern was with the U.S. Pacific Fleet, they were afraid the U.S. would ruin their plans (“The Attack on Pearl Harbor”). In the address, Roosevelt asked Congress to have the United States enter World War II. The vote was unanimous, except for a Montana pacifist whose vote differed from the rest of the House (“A Date Which Will Live in Infamy”). All over the country, radio stations were interrupting broadcasts to deliver the news about the bombing. After the attack, most people knew that America was going to enter World War II long before the president gave his speech. Economics, national security, and democratic values were all factors involved in explanation of United States’ response to Japanese and German aggression. To the superior degree, economics did not surpass the national security and democratic values. The United States are acknowledged for their freedom and equality, therefore their democratic values are a focal precedence. Meanwhile, our nation’s wellbeing is essential to use consequently the national security is foremost aspect in the response to Japanese and German aggression. America sought to be isolated at one point and avoid going to war with other countries for the protection of our country, but then the Pearl Harbor attack occurred. Bearing in mind the attack the Japanese put upon us, we entered the war which triggered these factors to take place, we insisted on spreading our democratic ideals. The aggression that the German and Japanese placed with us managed to make us secure our nation, preserve our nations self-governing principles in mind, along with the economics involved. It is said that if the French and British strength weakens, “…the United States will find itself alone in a barbaric world…” it is continued by saying that dictators all agree “Democracy must be wiped from the face of the earth” which exemplifies that America insists on spreading their democratic views and building their national security. After the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which made every person of japanese heritage on the east coast uproot and move to ten different internment camps. No matter what their loyalty or citizenship they were forced to get up and go to camps established in either California, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arkansas. After all said and done this ended up at over one hundred and twenty thousand japanese americans. Sadly most Americans don 't know why they were moved from their homes, how they were removed, and how they were treated within these camps.

The past 120 years have brought many changes, as well as surprises, to the United States of America. There have been inventions such as the automobile, the airplane, the television and even travel in space. There have been changes like the World Wars, Prohibition, the Great Depression and the cold war. Through the years, the American people have encountered joy, peace, and tragedy. One of the greatest tragedies experienced by Americans occurred on Sunday, December 7, 1941, the bombing of Pearl Harbor Naval Base.
