According to dictionary.com, child abuse is the “mistreatment of a child by a parent or guardian, including neglect, beating, and sexual molestation.” About five children die every day from child abuse and many children who are abused start experiencing it at eighteen months or younger. While abuse can start at any age, more than 25% are under the age of three and over 45% are under the age of five. The younger a child is, the more vulnerable they are. If signs of abuse are discovered at a young age, it is possible to recover from them completely through therapy and patience.
Sexual Abuse
There is not one type of abuse existing, rather, there are many types of abuse that have been experienced and witnessed over the years. The first type of abuse is sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is defined as any sexual act with a child performed by an adult or an older child.” These include forced sexual intercourse, rape, incestuous relationships, using the child in pornographic films and more.
There are many different signs of sexual abuse that a person needs to watch out for. The first is fear. A child may develop a sudden, unusual fear that was not there before of new people and places. They may also become very withdrawn from their peers and spend time alone. A child who has been a victim may also start experiencing mood swings and lash out on people at random. Another common sign is nightmares and sleep problems that were not there before.
