Child protective services (CPS) is a government agency located in many states across the United States that helps children stay away from harm and abuse. Child protective services and its agencies plays a big role in society. Children of all ages are assaulted and most of the times by a dearest loved one. Child abuse is defined as any type of neglect upon a child including mentally, physically, and sexually.
Social workers react to reports and take those in danger of neglect to a safer environment. “Being a social worker isn’t the easiest job to do, to succeed you have to be mentally strong and actually look forward to going to work” (Martinez). “The field of work I chose to do here in New Jersey is not just rewarding but it motivates me to become a better person and gives children who don’t have control a voice” (Martinez).
There are many pros and cons of this type of field work. For one, it is emotional and at times very dangerous. “Many of us who look after the country’s most vulnerable are threatened with physical violence on a daily basis, whether from domestic abusers or drug-addicted parents” (Sancken). There have been many social workers who have lost their lives to help better others like Teri Zenner, who was brutally killed while in a home visit in Kansas, as well as Tanja Brown-O’Neal, who was murdered by helping a man in need as well as many others.
Another negative aspect from seeking a social working profession is the annual salary. “The annual salary for a social worker varies based on exact employment and geographical location, but the median salary is just above $44,000.00. This is lower than other comparable professions and the salary for social workers is not steadily climbing” (Medical Articles and …show more content…

What more good to do in society than assisting children for a better, deserved lifestyle. Social working is nothing but a helping field that opens doors to kids that started off with nothing. “At times social workers will fail to overcome countless cases where the clients were given there undivided attention, and the best help one can receive but knowing you did the best you could in a case is what helps you move forward, and the cases you do succeed are the ones that over look that bad ones” (Martinez). Personally, I view this level of field work rewarding than anything else. The salary one receives as a social worker isn’t compared to the importance of the job itself and the difference you make in the life of young child, and the feeling of succeeding, I am sure, will be
