Between 1861 and 1865, the Civil War of the United States was fought. The war was the north against the south, the north against slavery and secession, and the south for slavery and secession. “During the course of the war, more than six hundred thousand Americans on both sides of the conflict died, making it to this day the bloodiest armed conflict in U.S. history.” At the end of the bloodbath, called the Civil War, the Union north won. Slavery was abolished and secession was no more. The lack of rights that the slaves had prior to the Civil War was none whatsoever. They were property to be sold and bartered to the highest bidder. The slaves lived, ate, and worked solely for their owner, also known as their master. At the time of …show more content…
Slaves had no money, no homes and not much hope of advancement in the real close future. The south kept the opinion that they were less than human for the most part. The north, though they wanted them free, still did not want what you would call a level playing field. They desired the slaves freedom, but did not want to associate with them. In Orwell's book the animals felt that they were being treated much as the slaves had been. The animals wanted equal rights, equal benefits and to be treated as they should be. The slaves who were very much equals, wanted the same rights as the animals in Animal Farm. Many times in the south the craving for freedom of the slaves overcame their fear of punishment. The slaves would try to escape and head north. Many slaves did succeed in their trek north, but many did not. The slaves caught were punished harshly and returned to the slave owner that they had run from. As in Animal Farm, this was one way that the slaves began to fight the very system that treated them less than they should have been. Some of the former slaves that escaped joined the Union army when the Civil War began. The freed slaves wanted to fight for their brothers and sisters that were still down south being held captive in
Slavery was one of the main factors sending the north and south into a raging war. There was more to than just slavery being abolished. Slavery being abolished to the south was like the government was taking abilities and money from them. Thus making them feel as if they were being done wrong. Also a majority of southerners were plantation owners needing slaves to work the farms so they could earn
When slavery was present in the United States, life was very hard for many slaves. They would spend their days working in the fields or in the home, doing whatever their master called upon. Slaveholders also held the power over their slaves treating them however they pleased. Most slaveholders were cruel which led to the slaves to do anything they could to avoid their master’s treatment and hope for a better life in the North. The North was filled with freedom, hope, desire and equality for people. It sounded like paradise to most slaves which was the proper motivation they needed to escape from their masters. Many slaves had goals of making in up North
This whole war between the north and the south all started because of one thing. The South wanted slavery intact and the North wanted to keep the union together. Shortly after the civil war came to an end, there was still a problem that had to be dealt with. What would happen to the farms and cities. Not to mention, what would happen if slavery ended? What kind of life would slaves live? The north were the upper states of union. Also were the industrial section of the united states. On the other side, the south were the lower section of the union. Therefore, they were farmers and hard labor workers. They grew most of the food and other goods that go to the all of the united states. The south and the north had many differences between them. They
The states rights, the Fugitive slave act, and how the line could not totally hold in which states would be totally free, these slaves had it harsh but the only way to freedom was to the north. Some helping slave made a place to be free and help to get there like the underground railroad. States rights made it so these slaves could have that idea of freedom and liberty in this country. Some abolitionist wanted to free the slaves by peaceful means and some like John Brown did not think so and sought violence to be the key to freedom for these slaves. In 1859 John Brown led an attack on Harper's Ferry, an ammunition camp, he captured this camp and he saw that the only way to free slaves was guns and violence. After he captured the camp and armed some slaves he had to fight a militia and lost, he was hanged three days later. Many things happened because the idea of freedom in the south and slaves mind, especially the underground railroad growing and helping more slaves become free, but sometimes there was no help and so the slaves organized rebellions, one such huge one was Nat Turner's rebellion. Nat’s rebellion was a brutal rebellion, of slaves, going house to house killing plantation owners and freeing more slaves as they went. But as all rebellions end in defeat, there was no revolution and they lost leaving a
The civil war was an ugly fight between the North, which was called the Union, they were against slavery, and the South who were called the Confederacy, they were for slavery.
During the time of 1861, something very important was happening in the new world. Something so important that it would change lives for the people of the new world. Most importantly, it would change the lives of African Americans. In 1861, most blacks that lived in the new world were slaves. They were not indentured slaves; they were slaves against their own will. “The Civil War between North and South was fought by the North to prevent the secession of the Southern states and preserve the Union” (Proclamation 1863). A war broke out between the north and the south. Abraham Lincoln was the President of the United States at this time. Moreover, “Lincoln’s bold step to change the goals of the war was a military measure and came just a few days
“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.” This quote by Abraham Lincoln boldly signifies the true battle cry for the union. Each era in American History have their individual causes and effects, but none are quite like the Civil War era. The Civil War had many causes leading up to it and the impacts changed a nation forever.
The American civil war brewing in the middle 19th century because of the varying views on slavery and also because of the growing sympathy for the abolition movement. But the American civil war was unofficially started when Abraham Lincoln was elected president (who was anti-slavery): slave states started seceding from the union. And when the shots at Fort Sumter were fired, the civil war had officially begun.
The cause of the American Civil War is known as one of the most controversial topics in American history. During the time period leading up to and during the Civil War period there were many issues that increasingly divided Americans. Since the founding of the colonies, the thirteen states had developed separately, and each had their own culture and beliefs creating large divides between the ideas held in the different states. The geographical and cultural differences between north and south would also start to create divides throughout the hundred years following the drafting of the constitution. The Union was constantly undergoing changes in order to be better and create an ideal lifestyle for Americans, yet the South did not agree with many of these changes and decided
As the North was becoming more industry related, the South became more and more worried. Not only were they worried, but they knew something was going to change the way the South is depicted today. Free slaves became more common roaming around the North, by escaping their owners. And, so did
To most slaves, the only way to gain freedom was to join the war. However, even during the war, slaves were still treated less than other, white, soldiers. They were paid less than them, and were led by only white officers. However, though the slaves were far from safe and fair conditions, some slaves, such as Jacob Stroyer, said that even though it wasn't their choice, slaves ¨´were delighted to be in military service´¨ (South Carolina Journey, 174). After the war, slaves came home to the biggest change the war yet. When slaves came back to the plantation, they were now free and had to be paid. Many slaves left their plantation to find work, or stayed on the plantation (although they were paid the bare minimum). Out of all previous slave states, the most successful was South
The South had ways to "keep slaves under control." They would keep them in groups of three or four. The owners woulds also not let them go anywhere after dark and if they wanted to leave during the day they would have to have a signed paper by their owner saying they can do whatever it is that they want to do. They would try so hard to just escape to the North and if they could to Canada. Reason is, they were technically "free," but at the same time they had no rights but they were not as mistreated in the north as they were in the south. Also it was illegal to marry slaves in the South so that was also a reason they would leave so they could marry.
Although the South began to come out numbered they still had strong beliefs in slavery and had been unwilling to make any compromise to end it. Southern men and women felt they should be able to go into northern territory in order to obtain their runaway slaves and in effort to continue this act the South created the Fugitive Slave Act. Such an effort only strengthened northerner’s will to end slavery while also creating more animosity between the North and
Slaves in the whole U.S. thought that they had the same amount of rights that the white men had. But most people thought that slaves were more property than men. Most people in the north wanted to abolish slavery, but some didn’t. Some mill owners, bankers, and merchants depended on cotton from the south. Non Slave owners in the south defended slavery do to the cotton industry was a booming production in the south.
Prior to Civil War, distinct Northern and Southern cultures were established; North strengthened on industrialized commercial area and the south reinforced with an agrarian agricultural area. Racism ran rampant in the Civil War and sectioned off everyone into their different groups and cliques. The north was more industrialized and didn’t really need slaves. But the south was around about 80% farmland so the south needed slaves to profit from their massive amounts of land.
