Factors that were the root of the Civil War were mainly economic and political differences. These differences increased sectionalism and tension in the United States; north versus south, each having different views on slavery, economy, and political policies. The inability to settle into a fair agreement resulted in the Civil War. The United States faced many economic differences between the north and south. The north was the most successful mainly because it had a commercial/industrial economy. The north’s value of manufacturing is very high compared to the south (Doc. 1a). They supported tariffs, in fact they "voted the President additional powers to enforce collection of the revenues" (Doc.6). Significant investments for internal improvements …show more content…
People went from having ten slaves in a farm to having 500 in a plantation. Slave brutality worsened because of this transition, abolitionist and free-soilers in the north did not like this drastic expansion. They opposed the Mexican War because it was a way for the United States to gain territory, and make them slave states thus increasing the expansion of slavery (Doc.4). Therefore compromises like the Compromise of 1850 were created, this compromise proposed that, “slavery does not exist by law, and it is not likely to be introduced into any territory acquired by the United States from the Republic of Mexico…” (Doc.5). Northerners also started showing opposition to slavery by not adhering to the Fugitive Slave Act. They believed that slavery is, "opposition to the first principles of principles of religion, morals, and humanity." and that its inconsistent with "our aims, as a free, humane, and enlightened people" (Doc.2a). On the other hand southerners believe that "slavery was one of the most dynamic economic and social processes..." and that without slavery "you could not have civilization... slavery freed upper class from manual labor" …show more content…
The north supported the admission of California as a free state, the Compromise of 1860 stated that "California ought to be admitted into the Union without restrictions as to the inclusion or exclusion of slavery" (Doc.5). The north also had a strong Republican federal government, they were the main support for Abraham Lincoln in the Election of 1860 (Doc 8.). In effect of the election of 1860, the North had control of the House of Representatives, Senate, and Presidency. The south had a democratic government, after the election of 1860 the southerners did not know that a Republican president had won the campain. President Lincoln was not listed on the southerners voting ballots. After the Dred Scott decision and the election of 1860, sectionalism increased in the United States. In December 20, 1860, South Carolina secedes from the Union and four other states follow. By February 1861, these states begin to call themselves the Confederate States of America. They elect their own president named Jefferson Davis. When Lincoln comes to power in March 1861, he states that states can not secede from the Union, but people can. Meaning that people can give up their patriotism, but states can't because the first three words in the Constitution are "We the People". These series of events already created tension between the Union and Confederacy. Then the first battle
The Civil War was provoked for several reasons which included industry, slavery, and territorial disputes among the Northern states and Southern states of the newly established United States. The first recorded engagement of war between the North and South is documented to have taken place on April 12th, 1861 at The Battle of Fort Sumter. This was the starting point of a war that would claim over 600,000 American lives in a relatively short span of 4 years.
Arguments that slavery was undesirable for the nation had long existed, and the northern states all abolished slavery after 1776. In the interest of maintaining unity, politicians had mostly moderate opposition to slavery, resulting in numerous compromises such as the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850. However, The compromise that was reached (the Kansas-Nebraska Act) outraged too many northerners, which triggered violent uprisings from the North. These uprisings angered the Southern states greatly.
Shelby Foote once said “But the Civil war defined us as what we are and it opened us to being what we became, good and bad things. It was the crossroads of our being, and it was a hell of a crossroads.” In this famous phrase he states how the civil war shaped the future of generations ahead, and was the collision of our beliefs, which led to issuing many policies and the burst of many disagreements, which were later solved with violence. His statement is valid because it interprets the situation the people where in, how they felt, and how the Civil War later affected people’s actions and beliefs.
take about hundred years later after the Civil War (1861-65) for the United States’ government to pass the Civil Rights Bill in 1964 recognizing the black community’s rights? Basically, the Civil War was about fighting for what kind of labor force was going to prevail. The north represented for a free labor economy while the South fought for the preservation of slavery. As Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor stated that the “wealth and power were not equally distributed in Southern society” (Yamahtta). While a small white proportion owned slaves in the South, the rest contributed in the southern society by maintaining order. In the North, free blacks were an obstacle for whites since they were constantly competing with each other for occupations. As a result, the
The Civil War happened due to the many differences between the North and the South. For example economic, social, cultural and political differences. These all helped lead America to a Civil War. But to an extent, the most important cause was the fact there were many disagreements with states' rights versus federal rights.
The battle of Bull Run ended today. Northerners, like myself, know it as Bull Run but the Confederates know it as Manassas. This battle is giving me bad thoughts about the outcome of this war. This was a Southern victory and the Confederate army looks high in spirit and high in confidence, compared to the hurt, tired, and disappointed North. The great leadership of the Confederate generals won this battle. Their plans and attacks were no match for the Union ones. I hope the North can do something to rebound from this great loss, maybe there will be a second battle.
On the other hand the Souther part of the United States’ economy was still being powered and dependent on the use of slave labor. The economy of the Northern United States was much more developed and modernized than the economy of the Southern United States. The North had much more cities and industrial factories, an Industrial revolution as a whole and generally more people in terms of population. The Northern United States was introduced to the machine which impacted the economy of the Northern United States dramatically because of the amount of thing that could be done in a shorter time period because of the introduction of the machine.
A colossal difference between the North and South was the two regions views on slavery. The reason the South had so many slaves inservice and residing in those regions due to their economy that was based solely off of agriculture products, but in order for plantation owners to make a sustainable profit off their products they needed cheap labor, and slavery allowed them that cheap labor. The North on the other hand relied on factory work and exporting and importing goods from their ports. When word got out
Although the South began to come out numbered they still had strong beliefs in slavery and had been unwilling to make any compromise to end it. Southern men and women felt they should be able to go into northern territory in order to obtain their runaway slaves and in effort to continue this act the South created the Fugitive Slave Act. Such an effort only strengthened northerner’s will to end slavery while also creating more animosity between the North and
In the beginning, the Union certainly appeared to be ahead of the Confederate. The North’s population was a major advantage. Around 22 million people lived in Union states. President Lincoln’s leadership in leading the Northern states geographically and politically made the North look superior to the rest (Kramer 119). Coal and iron came from Union mines making the North better in industrialization as well. The urbanization in the Northeast helped tremendously in terms of manufacturing. With the help of immigrants coming in from European countries and mechanized factories, the North was able to make more ammunition, arms, uniforms, medical supplies, and railroad cars. Throughout the war there was a steady flow of blacks fleeing to Union armies (Lapsansky-Werner 360). In the end, the North raised an army of about 1.5 million men. The Northern armies were better fed, armed, and clothed (Farmer). With all
A large issue between the North and the South was that the North completely revolved around manufacturing and industry production while the South revolved around farming, field labor, and slavery. Document B shows the North made a yearly value of $1,500,000 in manufacturing compared to the South’s mere $155,000. Document B also shows that there were absolutely no cotton bales in the North in 1861, at all. The fact that the South revolved around agriculture and hard labor, called for the use of a lot of slaves. The need for slaves and their manual labor almost tripled when the cotton gin was invented. This did not settle well with the North because the North barely used slaves, all they did was manufacture and had abolished slavery by the 1800’s. The South disregarded laws and guidelines and used slaves more than ever which caused conflict between both sides.
I. The Civil War was a time in American history built on growing tension and sectionalism. The constant battle over slavery between the North and the South would leave the Union anything but united. No number of compromises could stop the significant indifferences between the North and the South. Many events led to the horrific Civil War, but all of these events happened because of one reason; slavery. The Missouri Compromise, Fugitive Slave Act, and the Election of 1860 were the most significant of these events that led to the war.
The most known and effective factor that lead to the civil war was the different viewpoints regarding slavery. Being the largest slaveholding country in the world at the time, America relied on slavery for a long time but changed when the north started to adjust to the transforming economy were, as the south didn’t. Due to the north and South’s different economic situations it made it hard for each side to understand each other. The North’s economy was growing as they developed more industry and commerce, enabling the northern cities to grow and allow immigrants and easterners to move west. Due to the growing industry and commerce the north became socially aware of how wrong slavery was. The south however was in a different economic situation
A complex and complicated nature of the causes of the Civil War was in the center of the nations development. The Civil War started because of the differences between the free and slave states. One of the reasons that led the Union to the Civil war was the secession of the Southern States. Some of the issues included state rights, disagreement over tariffs, slavery which was legal in the South, but not in North, abolitionists and anti-abolitionists, economic, cultural and political differences between North and South.
One pattern in the past few years is that our country is starting to become more and more divided. Our country has only been divided before once. This was during the civil war where our country was divided north with the north on one side and the south on another. This division was because of different viewpoints on slavery, freedom, taxes, and the president. The south doubted the president by not favoring him or respecting him. The south didn’t like President Lincoln’s position on a variety of topic so they split away from the union. Now today our country is not divided yet but the situation is pretty similar. So similar that it is the same political party in office and the same political party trying to divide the country just because they don’t agree with the president's view points. One part that is slightly different in this situation is that there isn’t the north that thinks one way and the south feels another way. There are no distinct areas that think one way and another area that thinks another way. This division is because of a lack of an understanding of the other sides viewpoints. Recently I had an audio podcast with someone
