Child psychology is a specialized branch of psychology that develops and applies scientific knowledge to the delivery of psychological services to infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents within their social context. It is an understanding of the basic psychological needs of children and adolescents, and how the family and other social contexts influence the socio-emotional adjustment, cognitive development, and behavioral adaptation and health status of children and adolescents.

Lauren Smith is a five year old Caucasian girl who is demonstrating anxiety when separated from her mother. The family was referred to this service by their pediatrician. Over the past few months, Mr. and Mrs. Smith report Lauren has become increasingly troubled when being separated from her mother. She cries while clinging to her each morning before school and her father describes having to “pry her off” and carry her to the car. Lauren’s parents are also concerned with regressive behavior; she is speaking more often in third person when referring to herself, and she has also begun wetting the bed nearly every night. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had a conference with Lauren’s teacher two weeks ago at which time she told them Lauren was having difficulty concentrating and completing her work. S.A is 13 years old male, in the 7th grade. S.A. doesn’t like school, but if he had to pick his favorite subject, would be Social Studies. He has a special education teacher who helps him with math and reading. A IEP (Individual Education Program) was designed with his school, ForKids, and mother; which is designed to meet his needs, through educational accommodations. He receives specifically designed instructions and meets with a speech and language therapist monthly. The school reported that S.A. might be experiencing depression based on school behavior. Within the next five years, I plan on attending UT knoxville to work on getting a master’s degree in Psychology and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice; my ultimate goal is to become a forensic psychologist.
