Clinical child psychology is a specialty that focuses on providing psychological services to children ("American Psychological Association," n.d.). Child psychologists must understand the psychological needs of children and how external influences can affect them. They evaluate and treat a varied range of problems in children from emotional issues to trauma to mental disorders. Children’s mental health is extremely important to their development, as it contributes to how they think, act, and feel, and yet it is often neglected. Child psychologists focus on the mental well-being of their patients and help children cope and overcome difficulties they may face. We tell each other almost everything about our lives, and I can see that being an issue when I become a clinical psychologist. When I get married, I assume that I will also have a relationship that resembles the openness of my family. This could get difficult when I am under obligation to maintain confidentiality as stated by Standard 4.01: Maintaining Confidentiality ("Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct" 2017). As the girl’s psychologist, I would have to get her mother’s permission to reveal her diagnosis to the school, her teacher, or anyone else.
