As defined in the textbook, self-esteem is “your assessment of your worth or value as reflected in your perception of such things as your skills, abilities, talents, and appearance” (Beebe, p.40) Communication can enhance self-esteem because when you know how to communicate effectively, you are able to express yourself in a clear and precise manner, which in turn, would boost your self-esteem about communicating. When you are able to convey positive thoughts or gestures, or have them conveyed to you, it’s an incredible feeling. When I feel that I am communicating clearly and effectively, my confidence and self-perception is always increased, versus feeling unconfident when I can’t find the right words to say to express my thoughts and feelings. Self-awareness can be depicted by three categories, subjective, objective and symbolic self-awareness. Subjective self-awareness is being capable of differentiating the self from the social and physical environment. Objective self-awareness is an ability to be the object of one’s own attention, to be aware of state of mind and to recognize that one is thinking and remembering. Symbolic self-awareness is a unique ability to develop and communicate a representation of oneself to others. Self-awareness is a very critical and important skill for improving self-esteem because you need to know your true self, differentiate yourself from your peers or social group and how to express and communicate who it is you are to others. The importance of communication is crucial. Being able to communicate with one another allows an individual to create a moment of expression towards a particular interest they have, that the other person did not know, but also creates a uniformed understanding amongst both people. It is important to communicate because it also allows others to gain lacked information that could have not been heard or forgotten. Being able to communicate will not only allow you to express how you feel, but it gives others the insight into the way you are feeling if you are able to express in such a way. For example, if a teacher tells a class that their assignment is due at a particular time, then by expressing that to other students they may be able to receive the information needed. Furthermore, with communication also comes organization. Being able to communicate, for example, in a workplace will also help lead to the organization of a business. If all of its employees are able to work together than there is a more likely chance that the business will begin to grow, but it will also look more uniformed, organized. In particular, in college, it is essential to communicate because it is inevitable that we will be required to work in groups. If a person in the grow is struggling or not on the same page as the rest of the group than that will reflect poorly among the group as a whole. Being able to communicate will allow the student to receive the help that they need because without it than
Communicating effectively is important and integrated in all societies and has many different qualities that are important, like: empathy, clarity, physical expression, and effort. Empathy is important because without understanding where someone is coming you cannot properly understand what they are saying in many situations. For example, one expression can have different emotions for different people, like “I went to my grandparent’s house.” For some people this is a happy thing, while for others it may be uncomfortable, in this situation empathy would help create an appropriate response. Clarity is also important, if you leave an unclear message your words may be misinterpreted. For example, when I fight with my mom it is normally caused by a simple misunderstanding due to lack of clarity. Physical expression is also important because your actions towards another person, as well as facial expressions, can impact the view of a conversation or make up the conversation in whole. For example, you could say that someone is looking nice, but based on your expression the message can be completely different. If the statement is paired with a smile it would be seen as a nice thing, however, if the comment is paired with rolling eyes it would be seen as insulting. A final quality that is important is effort. Sometime there are language, or other, barriers in communication, this does not mean that quality communication is impossible, but effort in trying to communicate and looking
“The quality of your communication is the quality of your life”-Tony Robbins. How motivating. It should be because Tony Robbins is a very famous and successful motivational speaker. This quote couldn’t be more true. Good communicators have a very successful life and in order to master communication, one must understand communication theory. According to the text, Introducing Communication Theory Analysis and Application, communication is defined as “a social process in which individuals employ symbols to establish and interpret meaning in their environment”. There are many different definitions of communication, but all communication definitions explain the process of transmitting information, the framework of the information, and the effects of that information. Understanding communication theory can be very rewarding and very beneficial to people’s personal and professional lives. It can help with public speaking, interviews, relationships, and so much more. The world is always changing, which means communication is too. Taking a communication theory class helps students make sense of the world around us, express our wants, needs and desires to others in an appropriate manner.
In psychology, self Esteem is a word to mirror a person's general assessment or appraisal of own worth. Self Esteem encompasses beliefs and emotions such as triumph, despair, pride and shame. 'The self-concept is what people think about the self, Self Esteem, and the positive or negative evaluation of the self. An individual’s self-concept involves of the viewpoints one has about oneself, one’s self-perception, or, as (Hamlyn, 1983), expresses it, "the picture of oneself". Baumeister, Smart and Boden (1997) described self-concept as totally perception which people hold about themselves. It is not the "facts" about one-self but rather what one believes to be true about one-self (Mercer, 2008). Self-esteem protects the individual from potentially debilitating emotions as they work to reestablish and maintain a match between standards and perceptions. Self-esteem is able to defense the individual from such negative consequences both directly and indirectly.
Using clinical reasoning supported by current evidence base, you will consider how both modulation and praxis may be implicated in your client’s presenting difficulties.
“Communication must be HOT. That is; Honest, Open, and Two-way.” These words of Dan Oswald perfectly describe how successful communication should function. In today’s world, people are not always honest when communicating with their peers. Most of them are not honest and open because they are afraid of being judged, or they do not want to hurt the other person’s feelings. For an example, the recent presidential election. I knew of people favoring president Trump and were afraid to tell their friends and family because they did not want to be judged or having their friends or families leaving them for their personal opinion. In a way, when having a discussion with peers one should not be freighted to say what they believe in. A failure in communication occurs when someone is not honest to others and letting others know how they feel about any subjects. My personal experience from this was when I was not honest to my friend, Zoey, how she was treating me. I failed to be honest and open and that led to mistreatment and an unhappy friendship. From this experience, I learned to always be honest and open when I am communicating with others at all times.
Once in a while, when communicating, there can be boundaries that influence what you may attempt to convey. Effective correspondence is essential in guaranteeing that whoever you are talking comprehends what you are stating and it stays clear all through. One of the examples of a barrier is noises in the background. This can be as individuals talking around you or when you are out talking on the telephone and there is a considerable measure of movement. This can cause a great deal of issues for you and the person who you are communicating with since you both will battle to decipher what the other individual is attempting to state particularly if the commotion is noteworthy. It can likewise make somebody misconstrue you and think you said an option that is other than what you were stating, which can prompt clash and different issues. In the event that foundation commotion turns out to be excessively, individuals are compelled to yell just to guarantee that the other individual can be heard. Diversions can cause you issues when imparting to somebody since you place centre in to them and not into the speaker. A decent case of a diversion would be your telephone. In the event that your telephone is always ringing and making clamour, it occupies the speaker and you. It softens the focus you have up tuning in and the speaker may think that it’s impolite that you won't kill your telephone, which like some time recently, may prompt clash in addition to other things. Being less
Communication has always played a significant role in human life. It is an essential means for people to socialize. Also, it is another way to learn about the development of culture in a country, even in an era. However, corresponding in the past has been especially inconvenient, and people usually have to wait for a long time to get a letter. As an example, the latest post is expressed by letters from relatives, staff members, soldiers, Vancouver Fort and the Vancouver Barracks. Familiar views, vintage postcards featuring Vancouver Barracks, Mount Hood and the First Interstate 5 Bridge are represented there as well. This particular exhibition looks similar to the role of communication that was two hundred years ago. “The educated people could transform their genuine feelings into writing,” said Anderson, “though not necessarily fast” (Tom, 2012). However, with the development of technology, particularly the computer and the internet social networks are becoming more and more popular. Also, more and more people, which include not only young people but also old people use social media sites. For instance, Julie states in the article that when she got sick after her husband passed away, she used Facebook as a connection and entertainment. She sits every night alone which is a way for her to mingle without having to go out. She is careful not to post things that will make her look happy; therefore, she does not like to share things that make her look heartbroken. One day,
What if a nurse, failing to communicate effectively, resulted in a patient falling, developing a worsening disease, or die unexpectedly? Nurses have a major responsibility of communicating with a patient effectively on their level of understanding. Health literacy is not widely understood; therefore, part of a nurse’s responsibility is to be able to make the instructions or information presentable in way in which the patient grasps and understands the information (Spotlight). Effective communications consist of many components: listening, nonverbal communication, questions, and the use of facilitators (AAOHN journal).
Communication is crucial in relationships between people, because it transfers information or thoughts to help them to be on the same page or get to know each other. However, all kinds of communication are not effective. People need to learn how to productively communicate to get the best understanding. Animals can communicate, but humans have a better communication system and I do believe this is one of the reasons why humans are at the highest level of the animal kingdom. Therefore, humans can owe their success as the apex species to the ability to extensively and efficiently communicate with one another. From this, we can see the importance of the communication, which is very important in all places like hospitals. When the health professional has to deliver bad news to patients or patients’ families, they try to use the best method to relieve the sadness and shock. In the journal, “Strategies to ensure effective and empathetic delivery of bad news,” Carole Palmer discusses about delivering bad news to patients with lung cancer or mesothelioma at diagnosis.
The era of advanced technology has changed the daily lives of almost everybody and makes things more convenient. But, imagine the old days when technology was not so advanced like today. How did people communicate and what type of effectiveness did it have on their relationships? I had the opportunity to ask these questions to my grandfather and understand how communication really worked back then. Before I begin, smartphones have been the ultimate form of portable technology that most of use to date. In 2017, it is estimated that over 2.32 billion people share the market for having a smartphone which is truly unbelievable. (Number of Smartphone Users Worldwide 2014-2020: Statista, www.statista.com/statistics/330695/number-of-smartphone-users-worldwide/). My grandfather explained that smartphones have helped in a way of connecting from one place to another no matter the distance and it makes it accessible to talk on the phone. This concept relates to chapter 7, where it talks about production and distribution. It states, “It extends our ability to produce and distribute information at great distance in space or time from the point of origin” (Ruben & Stewart, 2017, p.171). My grandfather said that without this accessibility it would change the relationship among us because it creates a gap of not seeing each other or having that personal effect when you are speaking in person. On page 177, under the subheading “Technological Convergence” it states, “Telephones were used
Miscommunication is simply when two or more people fail to send and receive messages clearly or adequately. Surely we have all had our fair share of miscommunicating something to someone at some point in our lives. We may have said something that we didn’t intend to come off as harsh, but the receiver perceived it to be. When they perceived it this way it made it kind of difficult to get them them to understand that the message was not intended to be offensive, however, they took it anyway. Miscommunication is a big issue in today’s relationships. When it comes to romantic relationships, things are a lot different now than how they were in the 1950’s. From the morals, values, upbringing, culture, and ways of thinking, people in today’s generation don’t communicate exactly how couples did back then. Because of ego-involvement, fear, and trust issues (that this generation seems to struggle with), people find it harder to communicate with their partner which ultimately leads to baggage, fights, breakups, and unhealthy relationships. To understand why miscommunication is a huge issue in today’s romantic relationships, it is important to look at history and the time periods before to grasp why we do the things we do so we are better able to make changes and have more fulfilling relationships. The mid 19th century was more concerned about their morals and values they learned in their upbringing which consisted of not giving up when times get hard and fighting for their
Self-esteem reflects a persons overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own worth. Psychologists usually regard self-esteem as an enduring personality characteristics, it has become the third most frequently occurring theme in psychological literature. Self-esteem has been defined as the “level of global regard one has for self”(Harter,1993), or how well a person “prizes, value, approves, or likes” him or herself (Blascovish & Tomaka,1991),Self-esteem is all about how much people value them, the pride they feel in themselves, and how worth while they feel. Self-esteem is all about how much people value them, the pride they feel in themselves, it is important because feeling good about yourself can affect how you act.
Having good communication skills is important, whether it is talking face to face with someone, giving hand and face signals, or simply sending an email. Good communication causes someone to be seen as a leader. They are good listeners, learners, and socializers. They’re good communication skills get them far in life, such as good grades, promotions and long lasting relationships. Bad communication can cause problems in one’s life, such as, broken relationships, lost production, lack of understanding and even frustration. I would love to become a great communicator because it could make my life better in many different ways. I would not be such a procrastinator, I would be able to keep up with long distance relationships, and I would be a better employee.
How does technology really affect how alone we feel? Technology includes all keys to ensure we are occupied and never lonely. “Technology has provided us with even more creative ways to occupy our time” (L. DeLeo). These are continuous occupiers, such as; apps, articles, news, etc. Which help people all around the world to keep in touch with everyone and everything. Technology is good for us, as it entertains us in endless ways, provides communication towards peers/relationships over long distances, and allows for easy access to face to face communication.
