The goal of parole is to reduce recidivism and help rehabilitate offenders. That is not always the case; offenders will reoffend anyways and be sent back to prison to finish out their sentence. There are many programs out there that try to help parolees become a part of the community again and stay out of trouble. The programs are out there; it is up to the parolees to join them and stay committed. The programs goals are to help the offenders reintegrate into society by using procedures and community resources.

4.The parole board is responsible for parole releases and for revoking the release of criminals that has violated the policies (Bohm, 2012). A meeting is conducted by the parole board to determine if certain violators are responsible enough for early release.

Both jail and prison offer some type of early released programs, in this case probation and parole will briefly be discussed. Probation is a prison sentence that is suspended on the condition that the offender follow certain prescribed rules and commit no further crime (Seiter, 2008). Parole is similar to probation except that it is after a period of incarceration, which involved determinate and indeterminate sentencing (Seiter, 2008). The other types of prison sentencing include mandatory minimums, three-strike laws, and truth-in-sentencing (Wilson, 2001). The only difference is that a parole board allows convicts to serve the remainder of their term in society under supervision and strict limitations (Wilson, 2001). In summary both jails and prisons should strive to provide as much educational, health, and counseling opportunities as possible to reduce the likelihood of recidivism. Second, funding for the jail and prison systems will be briefly discussed.

Reducing the recidivism rate is necessary for citizens, inmates, families. The residents will feel safe knowing that the prisoner that was released won’t try to harm them. The inmates so that they can travel down a different path in life and learn how to support themselves without the aid of criminal activities. The families so that their lives can be less stressful fearing that something may happen to their husband, father, mate, brother or sister. There are challenges for the inmate when they re-enter society, fear of returning to prison, of not being able to find work, and being in the control by the criminal justice system if they’re on parole or probation. The programs that are available may have limited space or the inmates don’t know about them. The former inmate will need guidance for them to navigate the challenges of being released from prison and without it there is the reality of returning to jail.

Parole does not rehabilitate instead it restricts the ability to do criminal activity while on parole. However once off parole due to lack rehabilitations, no guidance, no structure and or an alternate fix of filling whatever avoid the criminal activity gave it’s easy for criminal to do it again. I think there should be a department that continuously follows up with offenders to make sure they’re on the right path but not to make them feel like the criminal system is trying to keep taps on them. The Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) has traditionally operated under a function organization structure within state government that clearly separated services provided into two primary categories: prisons and parole services with both categories reporting to the agency Director. An organization structure based on functions provides a clear direction for job requirements, allows the opportunity for staff to become experts in their field of assignment, which increases productivity. Although this structure was successfully utilized by the DRC for many years, unintentionally, it created a separation between levels of management and their subordinates and division and a division between the agency’s prison and parole services.

In order for an inmate to succeed in the outside world he or she needs to be given the psychological and spiritual tools to do so. It sounds so simple, yet it is quite a complex process. An inmate needs to feel good about themselves, inside and out, body and mind. They have to realize that everyone is given the opportunity to change, and repent for their wrong doings. Ultimately, they need to know that God will always forgive everyone just as long as they take God in as their savior, and live by his word.

Unfortunately, most parolees I worked with were not in touch with new technology, lacked communication skills, and had no money to travel to and from interviews, nor proper clothing. They quickly relapsed into old habits such as drug trafficking, stealing, and burglary to survive their need for money, food, and other amenities. It is obvious that hardships such as these make parolees repeat offenders. They end up back in prison to complete the remainder of their sentence, and sometimes serve out new sentences for new crimes committed. The parole board does not sufficiently scrutinize the job readiness of the inmates they plan to release, and things such as verbal and writing skills are ignored. An inmate can not be expected to survive as a parolee if he is not prepared to market himself for employment.
