I am writing to express my interest in the full-time counselor position at Community Substance Abuse Centers – Boston. After learning about the program from a fellow student and from the website, I believe that with my knowledge and skills of helping clients in recovery and my passion and eagerness to learn, I would be a committed member of CSAC Boston. During the senior year of my undergraduate education, I interned at the Rock County Alzheimer’s Support Center in Wisconsin. My work with individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease trained me to communicate with patients in a caring, sensitive, empathic but professional fashion. Throughout my two year of graduate courses, I developed my counseling theoretical orientation and practiced individual
The need for a substance abuse recovery home in Starke County, Indiana is a need that is unmistakable in the county based on the hefty number of individuals that suffer from substance abuse and dependency in the county which is clearly displayed by the recent number of crimes that are related to or involve illicit and prescription drugs. In attempt to meet this need and create an opportunity for individuals suffering from substance abuse and dependency to receive local substance abuse treatment in a recovery home the proposal will be presented to several stakeholders within the Starke County community. The term stakeholder “refers to those people who are affected, or could be affected, by the service” (Canadian Career Development Foundation, n.d.) that is being proposed. The proposal for the creation of a substance abuse recovery home will be presented to five key stakeholders including Ms. Becky Anspach the director of Community Services of Starke County, Starke County Community Corrections director of operations Mr. Robert Hinojosa, Ms. Dee Lynch the director of the Indiana Department of Child Services of Starke County, Porter Starke Services facilitator of intensive outpatient program treatment (IOP), and Ms. Rhonda Adcock the director of Starke County CASA.

On February 7, 2011 I attended the Alzheimer’s support group held at St. Roberts Adult Daycare Center in St. Charles, Missouri. Tina Joyner facilitated this group of nine caregivers and three students. There were two groups conducted simultaneously; one for the caregivers, the other for the individual who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The

Gary B. was a real estate attorney. He gradually found himself starting to have difficulties in doing his work, becoming less organized, and being forgetful. As a result, he was fired from 2 companies within 3 years. Gary was confused with his unusual behaviors until he went to a doctor and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (UsAgainstAlzheimer 's, “My Story with Alzheimer 's”, 2015). Actually, many people with Alzheimer’s share similar stories with Gary. Alzheimer 's disease (AD) is a type of dementia that slowly destroys memory and other important mental functions. It is difficult to detect in the early stage because its symptoms are not obvious in the early period and usually develop slowly. In the United States, there are around 5 million people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and this number is growing rapidly (Baker, 2011, p. 195). Although AD is becoming a common disease among old people, the cause of it is still unknown and there is no cure for Alzheimer’s currently, but some drug and non-drug treatments have been proven that can help with patients’ cognitive and behavioral symptoms. With the symptoms become worse over time and finally severe enough to destroy the ability to perform daily tasks, people with Alzheimer’s need to be taken care of by caregivers, which are usually their family members. The Alzheimer 's Association is the largest non-profit organization in the world dedicated to Alzheimer 's
Alzheimer’s disease is “a debilitating neurological illness characterised by significant impairment of cognition, especially in new learning and executive functions” (Simm, Jamieson, Ong, Garner & Kinsella, 2015, pg. 501). Its impact is not only felt by the individual, but also by family and friends who care for the diagnosed. It causes a change in the way many older adults age, adding more complications and a level of fear for their future, which has ultimately changed the way society views and handles aging. Social workers can play an immense role in helping ease this transition for those suffering, providing support, education, and resources for the individual and their family. Alzheimer’s can be extremely frightening for families dealing
March of this year, Governor Larry Hogan, put Maryland in a state of emergency due to the increase of overdose. Many stakeholders are now realizing that Maryland has a problem with drug addiction due to the amount of death that are occurring every year. Policy makers need to put in guidelines to determine how drug treatment centers should operate. Many drug treatment centers do not have treatment plans on how a client can reach sobriety. The Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems (bSAS) should be a mandatory system that should be used to help with creating a treatment plan for ever client. The system could help to generate data in structuring on what type of program works for each individual substance abuser. Non-profit organization are looking
Mr. Boyd reported in October of 2013, Ms. How-Boyd became a United States citizen. There are many individuals that are incarcerated that are part of a substance abuse program that provides treatments and different methods to help them overcome their addiction. There are often moments where these offenders have characteristics that affect the treatment all due to criminal thinking and criminal value (NCBI, 2005). Many times, these criminal justice clients resist treatment and deny that they have a substance abuse problem, which can create chronic problems for them if they do not seek rehabilitation (NCBI, 2005). Often, offenders usually will have psychosocial problems that can contribute to their substance abuse, which they have no control over after a period (NCBI, 2005). With these psychological issues, it can cause the individual to have a low self-esteem, depression, anxiety; and also enhanced expectations on the use of substances (NCBI, 2005).
A substance use disorder is a pattern of maladaptive behaviors and reactions brought about by repeated use of a substance, sometimes also including tolerance for the substance and withdrawal reactions (Comer, 2014). This can be very draining on relationships and family members of the people that have a substance disorder. They rely so much on this substance that no other care matters to them besides that substance. Which is some situations can cause loved ones to leave the situation that the person using the substance is in.
Substance use disorders (SUDs) have a significant and pressing impact on public health. It impairs a person physically and mentally, thus results in significant morbidity and economical burden.[i] Among the substance use disorder, Cannabis use disorders (CUDs) are the most common entity in adolescent population of USA.[ii] These are present in 3.6% of adolescents and 5.9% of young adults, compared with only 0.7% of adults over the age of 25[iii]. CUDs are increasingly prevalent and daily cannabis use among adolescents is rapidly increasing, which can lead to increased rates of CUDs, especially among young adults[iv]. The CUDs frequently lead individuals to seek treatment. In the year 2012, approximately 305,000 individuals got treatment for
Valueoptions does cover the cost of drug rehab. Ever since the Affordable Care Act was implemented, health insurance companies have been required to cover drug and alcohol rehab just like any other condition. However, it is important to note that health insurance coverage can vary depending on the plan.
ou question the good judgment of someone consuming both narcotics and marijuana for chronic pain correctly. Marijuana potentiates narcotic use which for the person struggling with a SUD, would make their addiction stronger (Seamon, M., Fass, J., Maniscalco-Feichtl, M., & Abu-Shraie, N. 2007). As a substance abuse counselor with a background in nursing I would want to know the nature of their chronic pain and if they have tried alternative and or holistic methods to approaching it. There is still a lot to be learned about pain and its very subjective experience, but one thing that the research has proven is that the neurotransmitter plays a role in pain (Doweiko, H. 2015). For this reason, a SSRI is often prescribed to those with chronic
Since the summer after my first year at Agnes, I have been an intern in the Department of Outreach at Emory University’s Brain Health Center. The goal of the Department of Outreach is to educate at risk populations about the prevalence of Alzheimer’s Disease. We are able to develop a strong sense of community by acting as the link between community members and the individuals who keep them healthy. As an intern, I am involved in the designing and implementation of annual community health programs. For example, one of the community programs that I led in forming was the CME Symposium for Community Physicians, which educates local physicians about the disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of African Americans with Alzheimer’s. I was primarily
