The poem “Wordsmith” by Susan Young follows the speaker watching their father as he constructs their house. Throughout the poem, their bond as father and child is made abundantly clear that they both love each other and value time spent together. Firstly, neither of them explicitly state how much they care but rather convey their familial feelings through actions instead. The speaker only watches their father “from the sidelines” (8) as they “watch with something akin to awe” (3) and never expresses their admiration aloud. Likewise, their father hardly outright states his affection but does it through working. In Those Winter Sundays, Eating Alone, and My Papa’s Waltz, the speakers all experience some form of isolation, while recalling their childhood relationship with fathers. This isolation causes loneliness, which then takes a variety of forms such as emotional, physical, or both. The fact that these authors brought to our attention these specific poems, shows that children inherit certain values from their emotional connection with their fathers in childhood, and take those values with them into adulthood, and into their own families.

I am going to perform Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden. in this poem Hayden explains how hard a speaker’s father worked. The term “blue-black cold” depicts the very early cold morning when the sky is between black and blue. It illustrates how early the father wakes up. He wakes up before sunrise which really had with a person who is tired to do that. Although it was difficult for him to wake up this early, he does it anyway to provide for his family. He doesn’t get enough sleep, but he is such a hard worker that the reader is able to grasp his hard work with the description “cracked hands that ached.” His cracked hands that ached further highlights his sacrifice. The word “ached” shows us a strong meaning for hard work. It shows that

The tone of the poem changes as the poem progresses. The poem begins with energetic language like “full of heroic tales” and “by a mere swing to his shoulder”. The composer also uses hyperboles like “My father began as a god” and “lifted me to heaven”. The use of this positive language indicates to the responder that the composer is longing for those days – he is nostalgic. It also highlights the perspective of a typical child. The language used in the middle of the poem is highly critical of his father: “A foolish small old man”. This highlights the perspective of a typical teenager and signifies that they have generally conflicting views. The language used in the last section of the poem is more loving and emotional than the rest: “...revealing virtues such as honesty, generosity, integrity”. This draws attention to a mature adult’s perspective.

In the third stanza, the narrator is remembering some details like the broken knuckle of his father (line 10), and that his ear was scraping on his father's belt buckle (line 12). As well in the fourth stanza, the narrator mentions the dirt caked on his father's hand (line 14). These images of the son imply a hard working father who had just come home from the plant and was spending time with his little son before putting him to bed. These images also support my point of view that the author still has pleasant memories of the event, which would not be the case if there was abuse,

The first stanza, which contains the son’s childish speech, is short, only three lines. However, by the stanza which contains the son’s angry talkback, the stanza is double in length, having four lines. Each line represents a literal level of maturity and growth that the son has gained. As time moves on, he is able to gain more and more experience in life. As his experience accumulates over time, so does his hostility. His terse, childish begging for his father to simply read another story turns to an angry speech about how he no longer beleievs in his father as an authority figure. Despite this, the son’s psyche changes back, as all this maturation is played out in the father’s head, and when he returns, he is back to his childish self, bu this stanza is the longest in the poem. This suggests that when someone is able to mature enough, they are able to comprehend more of the world than they did before, and are able to act

Children are often too juvenile and ignorant to comprehend all that is done for them. The narrator of this poem is now a grown man and is looking back on his childhood. He says that he would “[speak] indifferently to [his father], who had driven out the cold, and polished my good shoes as well.” (Hayden) After working hard all week to provide for his family, the narrator's father would wake early Sunday mornings to tend to his family. As a grown man, he sees how much effort his father put in to keep him content. Sometimes it was difficult to see this because he was overcome by fear: “...slowly I would rise and dress, fearing the chronic anger of that house.” (Hayden). Though the narrator was intimidated by his father, he still loved and appreciated him. This father- son relationship is unique because the bond grows and develops as a strong connection throughout time, with the help of maturity. He also describes the conditions of the father's hands demonstrating that he was a hard worker and still woke up before everyone else to warm up the rooms. The father basically says love in the simple act he does. Like many people I can personally relate to this poem. My father was not always demonstrative and affectionate but during my childhood years he always made sure I had everything I needed. That showed me that my father cared.

In the poem, I get a sense that there is no bond, like my father and I have which leads to confusion in the narrator's life. For instance, in line eight when he says, "I would slowly rise and dress,/ fearing the chronic angers of the house"(8-9), this gives me a strong sense of sadness, for him because I feel that he is greatly deprived of what every child should have a good role model as a father, and someone to look up to. “Speaking Indifferently to him, / who had driven out the cold”(10-11) is saying that they really did not know how to communicate with each other. I feel that the boy will regret not having and knowing what it is that makes you who you are, and may never get a chance to have and hold a special bond with his father and having a relationship with a person that can not be held with anyone else. This would bring an enormous amount of sadness to my life had I not had my Dad there to guide and protect me, when I could have used tremendous support and security.

“Those Winter Sundays” written by Robert Hayden, depicts the ungratefulness that a young boy has towards his hardworking father. Later in the poem, as he matures, he begins to realize everything his father has done for him, and his feelings suddenly change. Throughout the poem, Hayden uses numerous examples of imagery, personification, and foreshadowing to show how the speaker’s attitude regarding his father transforms from the perspective of a child to the perspective of an adult.

In the poem “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, the speaker is reflecting on his past with his father, but mainly the Sunday mornings he experienced during his childhood. Throughout the poem, there also happens to be a very dark and possibly even somber tone, which is shown by using several different types of literary devices. Hayden utilizes strong imagery supported by diction and substantial symbolism comprehensively. Furthermore, there are various examples of both alliteration and assonances. The poem does not rhyme and its meter has little to no order. Although the father labors diligently all day long, and he still manages to be a caring person in his son’s life. The poem’s main conflict comes from the son not realizing how good his father actually was to him until he was much older. When the speaker was a young boy, he regarded his father as a callous man due to his stern attitude and apparent lack of proper affection towards him. Now that the son is older, he discovers that even though his father did not express his love in words, he consistently did with his acts of kindness and selflessness.

Having little to no concern for oneself, that definition of selfless best describes the father in Robert Hayden’s, “Those Winter Sundays”, as well as mine. Because of this I decided to write my first paper for this class about the relationship between a father and son. Before taking this class I was never able to relate to a poem quite like this one. Especially when it comes to how hard a good parent is willing work to provide for their family. How despite the fact that my Father, much like the father mentioned in Robert Hayden’s poem, did not receive the recognition he deserved for his hard work he never stopped going the extra mile for my family. Also similar to the poem I look back with some regret on the lack of appreciation I showed to my Father. With fathers that display such hard work and dedication, even in the face of people who don’t fully appreciate them, relating to the wonderful poem by Robert Hayden’s “Those Winter Sundays” was easier than I expected.

Although the father has a rough exterior, is a man of few words, and is not the most sensitive man, the imagery used within this poem hints at the father being a hero in his young son’s eyes. Lastly, Roethke creates the picture of a loving relationship as the narrator states that his father “waltzed me off to bed/Still clinging to your shirt” (15-16). Based upon the imagery used, Roethke reveals an openly affectionate relationship between a hard-working father and his son.

The poem Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden is summarized by the first line where the speaker remembers how on “Sundays too my father got up early” (Hayden, 1). Although this first line is simple, it is vital to the main point the speaker is trying to present in the poem. The speaker is an adult looking back on his childhood and the relationship he had with his father. The speaker describes his father as a man who worked hard to provide for his family under any conditions. However, the tone of the relationship between the son and the father itself seemed cold and fractured. When analyzing the relationship between the son and father we see that the author is clearly represented by the speaker. In the poem, the speaker remembers how he was ungrateful for his father and all the work he did for the family. He regrets not treating his father more kindly, setting the tone of the poem. Therefore looking at the speaker’s relationship with his father and through the speaker’s tone, we see that love does not always appear the way we think it should.
