Comparing Emily Jennings's Life And Education

Satisfactory Essays

Emily was born in a farm family in Norwich, Upper Canada (Canada West in the past; named Ontario now). Based on home schooling by her mother when she was young, Emily became a teacher at a one-room schoolhouse in nearby Summerville, Canada West. During 1853 to 1854, Emily attended the recently built school, Provincial Normal School in Toronto, which is the only advanced school open to women in British North America. She graduated with a First Class Certificate, and then worked for the Brantford School Board, where she was perhaps the first woman who is appointed as a principal of a public school in Canada West from 1854 to 1856. Not long after that, Emily Jennings married with John Stowe at Mount Pleasant near Brant ford.
